After I left Angles, I wrote for Xtra West under their first 2 editors. Even though, I had really hoped for the job myself.
As it turns out, I would have left under the same circumstances as Cindy did.
This was a challenging article but what I most remember is the interview with Bonnie Murray, who was the office admin at the vancouver lesbian centre.
I asked her where men belong in the women’s movement.
her answer was on the side working with men
I asked shouldn’t women who have been battered learn that there are good guys out there?
No she said. it’s too emotionally risky. given who the abusers were. (paraphrased)
So, by your logic then, men should be running the battered shelters for lesbians?
I asked…………………
anyway, in a lot of ways, this might have been the most important thing that I wrote
not because of what was shared or happened after with the letters to the editor from the Battered Women’s Vancouver mainstream group
but because I took what I learned and made a difference
that went out into the world and made a difference
