COFFEE
A Screenplay By Nina Tryggvason
Logline: Girl and Boy meet Girl.
INT. KAIT’S KITCHENETTE – NIGHT.
Coffee drips into a glass carafe. The drips finish.
KAIT THORESON (shoulder length hair, 21, glasses, ‘Beam Me Up, Scotty’ T-shirt and jeans) pours five cups of coffee then places the mugs on a tray.
Kait places a sugar bowl and a cream container on the tray and exits to the living room.
KAIT’S LIVING ROOM
DON (22, sci fi geek), BRAD (19, crush on Kait, compugeek), GABRIELLA (25, granola-type) and DAVID (20, gaming geek) are huddled in conversation.
The table is covered in maps, writing paper, pencils, polyhedron dice, and snacks.
David, Brad and Don are seated on a couch, while Gabriella is in a chair. Dungeons & Dragon ™(“D&D”) books are everywhere.
BRAD Can we start now, Don?
Kait passes the coffee mugs out and puts the cream & sugar containers on the table. She sits in the empty chair.
Don glances at some papers (his gaming notes).
DON In the last session, Kait’s gladiator were killed, and Gabriella is also introing a new character.
BRAD Do we hafta listen to them generate their characters?
DON Patience, young Skywalker, they’ve already approved their characters with me. You are all in a tavern called The Thorny Rose.
KAIT My character is passed out under a table and he’s missing his left shoe.
2.
CONTINUED:
GABRIELLA Playing a dwarf, Kait?
DAVID It’s a nice change from gay minotaur gladiators.
KAIT David, I can still ask Don to let me roll for resurrection and Talesh Nagar will be more than happy to teach Ilsolth an interesting use for escape proof rope.
BRAD We never recovered Talesh’s body from the orc cavern. We need the body to resurrect a dead character.
GABRIELLA What if the orcs revive Talesh and she’s a undead minotaur gladiator?
DAVID For one, we’re playing DragonLance, not Ravenloft. For two, Ilsolth wouldn’t have sex with a living minotaur, never mind an undead one.
DON A-hem! This is getting gross. From his position at the bar, Dolph can see a dwarf passed out under a table. There are fifteen empty steins of Dwarvish Spirits on the table above him, each glass drained completely. What does he do, Brad?
BRAD My fighter wants him for the quest, anyone who can drink fifteen steins of Dwarvish Spirits and live has got to be tough.
Gabriella LAUGHS.
DON Farther down the bar, there is a female elf wearing a dark hooded cloak.
3.
CONTINUED:
GABRIELLA I don’t want to interrupt, but you forgot about my staff.
DON Sorry, Gabriella, the elf has a six foot staff with a silver dragon headpiece. Did anyone choose alertness as a speciality?
Everyone indicates ‘no.’ Gabriella grins.
BRAD I motion for David and Don to come over.
DAVID Ilsolth comes over to Dolph, but she’s not happy. People had better differentiate between character communication and player by using character names for characters and player for player, because this is the last time Ilsolth answers to David.
Kait gives Don a significant look. Don nods. Smiling, Kait picks up a twenty sided die and rolls it (anything above 14).
KAIT As Dolph approaches, Iron Swilldrinker projectile vomits.
DON Brad, roll under dexterity, there’s a penalty of minus two for surprise.
Brad wipes his hand on his pants, then selects a twenty sided die and rolls it (anything below 15).
BRAD Dolph jumps out of the way. Nice Kait, really attractive.
KAIT You try drinking fifteen tankards of Dwarvish Spirits. So I failed my constitution check.
4.
CONTINUED:
BRAD Dolph looks at Ilsolth and says `Are you sure you want this guy in our party?’
PAN from the players to the Elvis hip swinging wall clock. The hands wind forward to indicate 11 PM.
The SOUND of DICE ROLLING and GAME TALK SNIPPETS as the hands move. Fade voices on Gabriella’s plaintive ‘Owlbears like catnip?’
LATER
Kait and David sit amid the game debris.
KAIT Good game, huh?
DAVID Except for your character drinking everything even remotely liquid.
Kait clears the coffee table. David helps to clear the debris.
KAIT Hey, Iron’s a hardcore drinker, besides, Don gives experience points for role playing, not just the knock on the door, kill the monster grab the treasure routine. You aren’t still mad about Iron wasting that wishing potion, are you, David?
DAVID No, Kait, it’s every adventuring parties’ dream to have a clumsy fifteen foot alcoholic dwarf instead of magic weapons.
KAIT Yeah, well. It’s just a game. Want another coffee?
David picks up a twenty sided die and rolls it. He looks at the roll (anything above 15), and screwing up his courage…
5.
CONTINUED:
DAVID Can I continue gaming with the group?
KAIT Why wouldn’t you?
DAVID Because I broke up with Ginny, your best friend.
KAIT Two entirely unrelated things. Besides, we were friends before you and Ginny.
Kait throws a pillow at David.
KAIT (cont’d) I was the one who introduced you.
DAVID So, we’re friends no matter what?
KAIT Please, you sound like a bad buddy flick.
DAVID I just wanted to check because, well, I met somebody.
Kait sits in a chair opposite David.
KAIT Before you broke up with Ginny?
DAVID After, I met her at the last social. I mentioned that we go to the Rocky Horror Picture Show. . .
KAIT (unenthusiastic) So, she’ll be joining us?
DAVID Nnnnn..sorta. Greg the Creep got her; and I decided to let her find out what a geek he is herself.
6.
CONTINUED:
KAIT
(smiling) And how much better you are by comparison?
DAVID Ex-actly! I think she’s The One. I want you to like her, so it would mean a lot to me for my girlfriend and my best friend to get along. You’re a lot alike.
KAIT Then we probably won’t get along. How long is this The One gonna last? Ginny lasted four months.
DAVID I started with Ginny too soon after Gwen. Ellen’s different, really different. I’d like you to like her, I don’t want to have to choose who I’m gonna spend my time with.
KAIT Let’s go to Granville Street and wreak havoc in the arcades before we hit the theatre.
DAVID In costume? I don’t think so. (dismissive hand wave) Do my make up, wench.
KAIT You’re wearing a corset and nylons in public and I’m the wench? Don’t think so.
INT. THEATRE – NIGHT
TWENTY PATRONS sit in small clusters; most are not in costume, but some are dressed as Rocky Horror characters. Kait (dressed as Eddie) walks down the aisle. David (dressed as Frank N Furter) catches up to Kait and stops her.
DAVID There she is.
7.
CONTINUED:
Kait looks to where David points. GREG THE CREEP (32, no costume) is sitting arm around ELLEN (25, androgynous, no costume).
KAIT Where? I just see Greg the Creep with his arm around a guy.
(teasing) I had no idea that…
DAVID That’s not a guy. That’s Ellen. C’mon.
David goes to Greg the Creep and Ellen. Kait follows. David hugs Ellen. Greg the Creep scowls. Kait interrupts the hug.
KAIT Hi, I’m Kait. Greg, interesting lecture you did at the convention. Too bad about your video.
GREG THE CREEP I maintain beta is superior to VHS. It wasn’t my fault the convention didn’t have. . .
Gabriella (dressed as Magenta) waves at Kait and David.
KAIT David, let’s grab our seats, Gabriella’s waiting.
Kait drags David, looking back, away.
Ellen is surprised by the abrupt departure. Greg is relieved
ELLEN Yeah, nice to meet you, too.
Ellen sits down. Greg the Creep slides his arm around her.
Ellen leans forward and smiles to David. David waves back.
Greg the Creep withdraws his arm as the lights dim and the curtains separate.
As the OPENING FANFARE starts over a scratchy print of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, David hits Kait on the arm and points to Greg the Creep.
8.
CONTINUED:
DAVID See? He’s already striking out!
PATRONS Lips! Lips! Lips! Lips! Lips! Lips!
ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW STYLE WIPE
INT. BINO’S RESTAURANT- NIGHT.
BACKGROUND MUSIC is MUSHY CONTEMPORARY.
David, Brad, Kait and Gabriella sit in a booth.
Full creamer containers form a pyramid at the centre of the table, a dozen empty containers are stacked in a tower nearby. D&D manuals are stacked to the side.
Kait absent mindedly plays with a pair of ten sided dice.
David is rolling four six sided dice.
Brad and Gabriella are reading D&D handbooks.
WAITRESS pours coffee, without asking. David smiles flirtatiously at the waitress. She shakes her head ‘no’, then leaves.
DAVID How do Dark Elves count their daggers?
KAIT I have no idea.
DAVID Dark Elves don’t count daggers, they count backs!
Brad laughs, Kait and Gabriella exchange exasperated looks. David grins, then rolls his dice.
DAVID (cont’d) Another eighteen! You hate me, Kait.
9.
CONTINUED:
KAIT I don’t hate you because you roll characters with high attributes, David. I’m just not into it tonight.
BRAD If it helps any, I hate you.
David sticks his tongue out at Brad.
GABRIELLA Bear it and share it, David.
David looks at Gabriella, then puts his arm around Brad.
DAVID I’d share with you, Gabriella, but Brad would be jealous.
Brad flings David’s arm off of his shoulders, then squeezes as far away from David as he can in the booth.
BRAD I hate that! I told you to stop pretending we’re fags. You’re really weird David.
DAVID But, darling!
David slithers closer to Brad to kiss him. Brad holds him off.
DAVID (cont’d) That’s not what you said last night.
BRAD Kait, can I change sides with you? Please?!
Kait shrugs, then looks at Gabriella.
KAIT Do you want to sit with David?
GABRIELLA I only like sharing people.
Kait gets out of the booth.
10.
CONTINUED:
KAIT Brad, you sit with Gabriella. David, can I talk to you at another booth for a minute?
Brad slides out of the booth and sits beside Gabriella.
BRAD Make him stop pretending I’m his boyfriend.
David and Kait move to another booth. Gabriella smiles at Brad, shakes her head and sips her coffee.
BRAD (cont’d) It really makes me uncomfortable, and he knows it.
GABRIELLA That’s probably why he does it.
BRAD His characters always flirt with mine. He really enjoys watching people squirm when he played gay fighters. I switched to women characters so at least the flirting would be more normal.
GABRIELLA Did it work?
BRAD No, he switched to women characters and just kept doing it.
KAIT & DAVID’S BOOTH
DAVID
(builds a creamer pyramid) What’s up? You know I’m just teasing Brad…
KAIT It’s not Brad. It’s…not easy, I’m usually the confidee, not the confider in these types of conversations.
11.
CONTINUED:
DAVID What type? Tell me. You’re my best friend, except for Brad and Don.
KAIT Close friend, you know I don’t rate people.
DAVID Yeah, yeah, okay, whatever.
KAIT It’s different from what we normally talk about.
DAVID Normal? We’re not normal. We play Dungeons and Dragons. We belong to a science fiction social club; an oxymoron if I ever heard one.
David reaches across the table and takes Kait’s hand, as if about to reveal devastating news.
DAVID (cont’d) We sit in Bino’s drinking coffee for six and eight hours at a stretch. So tell me what we do that’s normal. What haven’t we talked about?
KAIT Sex.
BRAD & GABRIELLA’S BOOTH
BRAD (summoning courage) How long have you known Kait?
GABRIELLA Just a couple of months, I met her at the social. Why?
BRAD
(disappointed) Do you think if I asked her out, she’d accept?
12.
KAIT & DAVID’S BOOTH
DAVID We talk about sex. I told you about me and Cynthia behind the bleachers, and me and Ginny in the tub, and Michelle in her office and Donna…
KAIT (picking up the creamer ‘capstone’) Have I ever told you anything?
DAVID Sure, you told me you and…. what about that date with, um, …Calvin?
KAIT I told you Kevin spent the night. Did I neglect to mention he spent it on the couch?
DAVID Yes.
KAIT (taking a deliberately slow sip of coffee) Oops.
DAVID Okay, this is a weird area. Kait, you’re 21, you can’t be a virgin.
Kait takes a long, uncomfortable swallow of coffee. David sits back to absorb this new information.
BRAD & GABRIELLA’S BOOTH
GABRIELLA I don’t think she’s dating anyone. Her and David have some interesting energy, but it’s not sexual.
13.
CONTINUED:
BRAD I’d ask David’s advice, but the last time I asked him about picking up women, he offered me flirting lessons.
GABRIELLA Interesting. Why didn’t you accept?
BRAD David is good at getting girls, but they never seem to last long. Besides, what if he told Kait before I got a chance to ask her out?
(elbows on table, face in hands) I’d die.
KAIT & DAVID’S BOOTH
DAVID I never would have. . . you teased Ginny about her virginity and all that time you. . .
KAIT First, Ginny wore her virginity like a badge of honour. I don’t need validation from anyone. Second, Ginny is sexually unsure of herself, I’m not. There’s a big difference between secure and active.
DAVID So, you and who did the dirty deed?
KAIT Just a guy from university. I thought I was above this shit. The first time a guy presses me. . .
The waitress returns.
WAITRESS Do you want new coffees or shall I top up the cups at your old table?
14.
CONTINUED:
KAIT We’ll be back there in a sec. Thanks.
The waitress leaves. David watches her.
DAVID Hey, sex is not a bad thing. I do it all the time. Tell me about it.
KAIT I gave him a ride home, he lives along one of the routes I can go. He invited me in for coffee and, well, you know me and a game of chicken. I just didn’t think it would really get that far.
DAVID Why didn’t you say stop?
KAIT I don’t know, after a point I felt obligated. I was curious. I was, flattered, that he wanted me.
DAVID You don’t sound happy about it. Wasn’t he any good?
KAIT I kept wondering if I’d left the lights on in my car and how soon afterwards could I leave. I made a lotta jokes. I can’t remember any, no, after, when I was getting dressed, I picked up my bra and said ‘Well, that’s the first thing I lost.’ I dunno. Something was missing.
DAVID Do you like him?
KAIT Yes, but not, not that way, you know.
David reaches across the table and holds Kait’s hands.
15.
CONTINUED:
DAVID That’s what’s missing, women need to feel emotionally connected to a guy to enjoy it. I enjoy sex better that way, but sometimes, it’s just sex.
KAIT
(hesitantly) I don’t think that it’s simply a matter of not caring enough. The whole…experience left me emotionally cold. It just…it just felt wrong.
JESSIE, (20, red hair waitress) comes to their table. Jessie is holding a pot of coffee and a fresh bowl of creamers.
JESSIE Coffee? Or should I bother to ask?
Kait grabs a cup and rattles it against the saucer.
KAIT There’s too much blood in my coffee stream.
DAVID Going to join us on your break, Jessie?
JESSIE Already had my break, I’m gone in three hours.
KAIT You’ll be gone and we’ll be here, missing you.
JESSIE (leaning in close) You’ll be back tomorrow.
Jessie leaves. Kait watches her. David studies Kait.
DAVID ‘Member that woman I introduced you to?
KAIT Which one?
16.
CONTINUED:
DAVID Rudeness! Ellen, at Rocky?
KAIT So she didn’t take to Greg the Creep?
DAVID It was a one time thing. She called me the next day and I didn’t get home for three days. She told me she’d never been multiple orgasmic before me. I’d always thought that that was a myth women made up to make guys feel jealous.
KAIT Oh, too much information.
Kait leans closer and kisses David on the cheek.
DAVID Why don’t I call Ellen and see if we can go over. I want you to like her.
KAIT So you keep saying.
DAVID You were really rude when I introduced you at Rocky Horror, but she’s still willing to meet you. Maybe she can join the gaming group?
KAIT It’s kinda full right now.
DAVID We’ll ask Don. And Kait, Ellen’s gonna make my genetically programmed sexual fantasy come true.
KAIT Genetically programmed sex fantasy? The one where you get to have someone?
17.
CONTINUED:
DAVID No, the one where I get to have two someones. Ellen’s bisexual. She says all writers should be.
KAIT Yeah, well, I’m a writer and I’m not bisexual; and I fail to see the connection.
DAVID So, let’s go to her place and she can explain it.
KAIT First, it’s midnight. Second, what about Brad and Gabriella?
DAVID They’ll manage, besides Ellen’s up all night.
EXT. ELLEN’S HOUSE – NIGHT.
STRAINS OF MUSIC can be heard. David KNOCKS.
As Ellen opens the door, the MUSIC volume increases.
David steps in and hugs Ellen. She returns the embrace, looking over David’s shoulder at Kait in the doorway.
Ellen is surprised at Kait’s presence, and scopes her out.
The front room is crammed with garbage bags, coats, and gardening tools.
Kait lingers uncomfortably in the doorway, embarrassed by her rudeness from their previous meeting.
ELLEN Come in.
ELLEN’S FRONT ROOM
They enter, David heads down the short hall. Kait waits for Ellen to close the door. Ellen smiles.
ELLEN (cont’d) It’s a bit messy, I wasn’t expecting company.
18.
CONTINUED:
KAIT Us vampires tend to keep weird hours.
ELLEN You too?
Ellen walks past Kait down the hall. Kait follows.
ELLEN’S KITCHEN
The MUSIC VOLUME INCREASES as they approach the living room. The kitchen is small and cluttered: unopened mail, coffee filters, hair dye package, and a black lace bra vie for counter space with a few days worth of haphazardly stacked dishes.
ELLEN Coffee?
KAIT We just came from a six hour Bino’s binge.
ELLEN Why would anyone sit in Bino’s for six hours?
DAVID Me ‘n’ Kait do it all the time to talk and try to pick up waitresses.
ELLEN Both of you?
KAIT We both sit there, he tries to pick up the waitresses. Oh, and build temples to honour the Coffee Goddess.
David leans in and kisses Ellen.
ELLEN Coffee Goddess? Is that a new geek ritual?
DAVID You must build temples to Caffina or else she makes your coffee cold.
19.
CONTINUED:
ELLEN Well, go sit in the living room and I’ll bring hot coffee. How do you take it?
KAIT Black.
Kait leaves the kitchen. David lingers in the kitchen with Ellen.
ELLEN’S LIVING ROOM
The bookcase overflows with hardcovers (fantasy novels, 30′s & 40′s film books) and sci fi paperbacks. Dragon figurines adorn a dresser.
A black and white poster of Errol Flynn hangs on a wall, and there is a birdcage with two lovebirds, a tank of goldfish and a caged hamster. On a desk by the only window is a typewriter and blank paper.
Kait makes a face at the record spinning on the stereo. She continues towards the couch, pausing at the desk. Kait looks at the page half ejected from the typewriter.
Ellen and David enter.
ELLEN David says that you write.
Ellen hands Kait a coffee cup. Kait glances into the cup. The coffee has cream in it. Ellen turns the stereo down.
KAIT Poetry mostly, rather, mostly bad poetry.
Kait sips coffee. Ellen sits at the typewriter. David sits on the floor, his back against Ellen’s legs.
KAIT (cont’d) God, you could melt a spoon in this coffee.
ELLEN I like coffee that bites back.
David pretends to bite Ellen’s leg. Playfully, she swats him.
20.
CONTINUED:
KAIT Lately I’ve only been writing for courses, I’m an English major at Simon Fraser University.
ELLEN Would you read my novel? It’s been a long time since I’ve met anyone else who seriously writes.
KAIT
(flattered) Sure. How long have you been writing?
Ellen picks up the manuscript.
ELLEN Can’t remember when I wasn’t working on this book.
Kait stands and takes the pages; their fingertips touch.
KAIT How come you’ve never finished it?
Kait sits back on the couch.
ELLEN Well, I get 95 percent done and something happens or I start to hate it so I begin a new version.
David gets up on his knees, facing Ellen, and leans in to kiss her. She blocks his attempt by raising her hand, and leans back in the chair. David sits back down, sulking.
DAVID (to himself) Fine.
KAIT What do you mean ‘something happens?’
ELLEN I’ve had a few destroyed by ex- boyfriends who couldn’t cope with being second to my writing.
21.
CONTINUED:
David uncomfortably squirms at Ellen’s statement. Ellen’s stopping David’s kiss suddenly registers on Kait, she runs her fingers through her hair. Kait focuses too intently on the pages.
ELLEN (cont’d) (intimately) Read it out loud, Kait.
David stands.
DAVID I need more coffee, Ellen.
David waits for Ellen to offer to get it. When she doesn’t, he exits.
Ellen looks over her shoulder, then at Kait. Kait shrugs.
KAIT I’ll wait for David to come back. I’ve never met anyone with this many pets.
ELLEN They’re not the pets, I am.
Kait laughs, places her cup down, and arranges the pages.
KAIT You’re really different, Ellen.
David re-enters.
DAVID (re-seating against
Ellen’s legs) I told you that you’d like Ellen, Kait.
KAIT Yeah, well, you assume I listen to you.
ELLEN (making a face at David) Why would anyone listen to him?
22.
CONTINUED:
KAIT Beyond me. I only do when we’re playing Dungeons and Dragons, otherwise, he tries to kill my character.
ELLEN I love playing D&D! Could I join your campaign? I have a seventh level thief/fifth level magic user.
DAVID That’d be great…
KAIT We’ll have to ask Don, the Dungeon Master. He thinks that five players is optimum and we do have a full party.
DAVID But I’m sure Don wouldn’t mind.
Kait looks at David, then back to Ellen.
KAIT Did David tell you about the first campaign that we played?
Ellen moves to the couch, sitting sideways facing Kait.
KAIT (cont’d) My sixth level fighter killed his fifteenth level magic user.
ELLEN No, how? He makes his characters so invincible.
David glares at Kait, then sits on the other side of Ellen. He pulls her back against himself, she disentangles herself and sits forward as Kait talks.
KAIT I rolled a one for my attack roll.
ELLEN No, wait, I thought ones are a critical miss.
David moves to the hamster cage, seething.
23.
CONTINUED:
KAIT They are, I was aiming at a goblin chieftain. I threw my sword and Charlie, the Dungeon Master for that campaign, rolled to see what happened to it, if it hits a wall and breaks or…
DAVID It hits my character.
Neither Kait nor Ellen look at David.
KAIT David’s wizard is in the middle of a spell and my sword flies right through his chest. The metal reacts with the spell energy and blam! Wizard nuggets all over the cavern.
Ellen and Kait laugh. David slouches lower on the floor.
DAVID Well, Freddie didn’t think it was funny.
ELLEN Freddie’s a furry poop factory. Kait, more coffee?
KAIT Um, sure.
Ellen places her hand over Kait’s, then takes her cup. Ellen exits. David looks at Kait.
DAVID I need more coffee, too.
David gets up and exits to the kitchen.
ELLEN’S KITCHEN
Ellen is making coffee. David embraces her from behind. She flinches a moment, and then slowly relaxes into the embrace.
DAVID
(kissing Ellen’s throat) How about sending Kait home and having fun?
24.
CONTINUED:
ELLEN I like her. Mmmm. I like that too. But right now, I am meeting your friend. You brought her over here. Another night. Next week.
DAVID (leering) Maybe I can convince you otherwise?
Ellen pushes David firmly away from herself.
ELLEN No, I have company. Besides, she’s your ride home and it’s not nice to ask your friends to wait in their car while you get laid.
David steps back, confused by this turnabout.
DAVID Well, I sorta thought I’d stay the night.
ELLEN You thought wrong. Kait’s nice, I’d like to talk to her, besides, we’ll see each other all the time, it’s not often I get to meet friends of the people I fuck. This might be my only chance to meet her.
DAVID I’ll let her wave at you the next time I get her to drop me off at your place.
David sulks back to the living room.
EXT. ELLEN’S FRONT ROOM – NIGHT – NEXT WEEK.
Ellen stands to one side as Kait enters. Kait smiles shyly, and offers Ellen a box of chocolates.
KAIT I guess I should have called first, sorry.
ELLEN It’s okay, come in. I love having company.
25.
CONTINUED:
Ellen peeks around the corner.
ELLEN (cont’d) Is David coming?
Ellen does not step back, so Kait steps sideways into the house.
KAIT No. I, uh, mean I haven’t seen him.
ELLEN That’s okay, I’ll make some fresh coffee and you can read my new pages to me, if you’d like.
Ellen locks the door then exits to the kitchen. Kait follows.
ELLEN’S KITCHEN
The kitchen mess has shifted, but not lessened. Ellen puts the kettle on the stove and turns the burner on.
KAIT I’ve been writing, too. I’d, uh, really like your opinion…
Ellen takes the coffee from the fridge and pours five heaping scoops of coffee into a filter.
ELLEN Sure, coffee’ll be ready in a minute, go sit.
Kait exits to the living room. Ellen glances at the dishes, and, shrugging, pulls two mugs from the stack and rinses them out.
ELLEN’S LIVING ROOM
The living room has laundry, books, and papers, over- spilling. The blank stack of paper is slightly lower. There is a portrait of an androgynous person on the wall. Kait does not notice it.
ELLEN (O.S.) You take your coffee with milk, right?
Kait sits at an end of the couch.
26.
CONTINUED:
KAIT (Nervously organises her pages) Yes.
Ellen enters with two mugs.
ELLEN Here, you can have the clean mug.
KAIT (taking the coffee) Thank you.
ELLEN By the way, I liked the way you read my story the other night.
Ellen sits in the middle of the couch, facing Kait.
KAIT Umm thanks. A lot of my classes require reading aloud.
Kait shifts uncomfortably away and sips her coffee a little too quickly.
ELLEN It helps to have someone else read, you know if it sounds right. Let’s see your pages. What are you taking in school?
Ellen takes the pages, her fingers touching Kait’s.
KAIT Right now, literature studies and creative writing classes. I want to be a writer.
ELLEN So what are you working on now? Pass the ashtray?
Kait gets the small glass ashtray from the end table and places it on the back of the couch within Ellen’s reach.
KAIT Outside of classes? Just this story.
27.
CONTINUED: KAIT (cont’d)
I haven’t written anything that
wasn’t for a class since high
school. Not enough time, I suppose,
or inspiration.
ELLEN
(lights a cigarette)
Want one? Y’know, Kait, if you’re
going to be a writer, you have to
write. And to do that, you have to
live. Experience as much as you
can, and that does not mean sitting
in some airless classroom with a
blowhard droning on and on about
dead white European men.
Kait looks hard at the extended pack of cigarettes and nods. Ellen lights a second cigarette, then passes it to Kait.
ELLEN (cont’d) Ready?
Kait takes a shallow drag on the cigarette, nods and suppresses her coughing fit. Ellen skims for a moment, turning the pages, a paragraph catches her eye.
ELLEN (cont’d)
I turn to look at her, my emotions
torn between passion and loyalty.
Rachel kisses me, and I am lost.
She pulls my shirt off, her tongue
circling my left nipple. Her eyes
plead longingly with mine. I
consent, closing my eyes. Her
tongue leaves my nipple and slowly
slides lower down my body…
Ellen takes a long drag on her cigarette.
ELLEN (cont’d)
Mmm, makes me want to have a
girlfriend again.
Ellen stares at Kait. Kait sips her coffee too intently.
ELLEN (cont’d)
So, are you writing from
experience, Kait?
KAIT
No. I’ve only, ah, once, this guy
that, uh, I know.
28.
CONTINUED:
Kait runs her hand through her hair and looks everywhere but at Ellen. Kait notices the drawing.
KAIT (cont’d) The story began as a man and woman, but you know how characters know more about themselves?
ELLEN Uh huh. And sometimes about you?
Kait bites her lower lip, and goes over to the drawing.
KAIT This is new.
ELLEN Yes. A friend of mine did it for me.
KAIT It’s very compelling, especially the eyes.
Ellen gets off of the couch and stands very close behind Kait.
ELLEN Do you want me to tell you male or female?
KAIT I’d rather decide for myself, besides, it adds to the drawing’s mystique, not knowing.
Ellen kisses Kait on the back of the neck. Kait turns, in shock.
KAIT (cont’d) Why did you do that?
ELLEN Isn’t that what you’re really here for, Kait? David must have told you I’m bi.
Ellen runs her hand through Kait’s hair. Kait steps to the wall.
29.
CONTINUED:
ELLEN (cont’d) I won’t make you do anything, Kait, but I think you want to. Search your feelings.
KAIT Isn’t that what Darth Vader said to Luke when he told him that he was his father?
Ellen backs away almost as if she’d been hit.
ELLEN You and David really are geeks.
Ellen goes back to the couch. Kait slumps against the wall.
ELLEN (cont’d) Why did you come here if it wasn’t for sex?
KAIT I’d like to be friends with you, I don’t know a lot of other people who write to be published. I think you’re different. You’re dating by best friend. I’m not sure, I just felt drawn.
ELLEN Correction, I’m fucking your best friend, not dating him. It’s about getting laid. Nothing else.
Kait returns to the couch.
KAIT But, David said…
ELLEN David doesn’t own me, I see who I want when I want and how I want. He’s not even the only man I’m fucking right now.
KAIT Does David know?
ELLEN I just said, David doesn’t own me. I never agreed to be monogamous with him.
30.
CONTINUED:
Kait sits back, considering Ellen’s words.
ELLEN (cont’d) Besides, I’ve never slept with a virgin before.
KAIT I’ve had sex…once…with a..man.
ELLEN Did you like it?
KAIT
(her need to talk overcomes her nervousness)
It felt like what was happening was happening to someone else. Weird, huh?
ELLEN No, but I do think you’re a lesbian.
KAIT What?
ELLEN It’s in the eyes. Lesbians have a certain independent fire, a defiance that straight women lack, even the feminist ones. Sometimes you can just tell by looking at a person, even if they don’t know themselves. It’s called gaydar.
KAIT
(excitedly) I never put words to those feelings. Ellen, I think, I mean, I…I’m attracted to you. And I don’t know what to do about it.
Ellen kisses Kait. Kait enthusiastically returns the kiss. Ellen removes Kait’s top and slips her bra strap off her shoulders.
ELLEN Besides, only lesbians keep processing feelings after the agreement to have sex has been made.
31.
CONTINUED:
Kait blushes. She and Ellen lock eyes for an intense moment, Kait reaches behind herself to undo her bra hooks.
ELLEN (cont’d) No, I want to, it’s been awhile since I took off someone else’s bra.
They kiss again. Ellen removes Kait’s bra. She lays back on the couch, pulling Kait on top of her. Kait opens Ellen’s robe and kisses her breasts.
ELLEN (cont’d) What did you do for excitement before you met me?
KAIT (kissing Ellen’s breasts) There was nothing before you.
ELLEN (smiles) That feels good, but do it lower.
Kait stops and looks at Ellen. Ellen places her hands on the sides of Kait’s face and pulls her to her. She kisses Kait softly.
ELLEN (cont’d) I forgot, you’ve never done this before, we’ll go slower.
INT. ELLEN’S LIVING ROOM (2 DAYS LATER) – NIGHT.
Kait is reading to Ellen. Kait gestures with her hand, knocking both the ashtray and Ellen’s coffee cup behind the couch. Kait is mortified. Ellen laughs.
INT. ELLEN’S LIVING ROOM (THE NEXT NIGHT) – NIGHT.
Ellen is on the floor sorting pages. Kait enters with an arm load of take out containers and two forks. Kait sits, barely managing to not spill the containers.
INT. ELLEN’S LIVING ROOM (FOUR NIGHTS LATER)- NIGHT.
Kait and Ellen are necking on the couch.
32.
INT. ELLEN’S KITCHEN (THREE NIGHTS LATER) – NIGHT.
Ellen pulls two crystal goblets from her cupboard. Kait opens the refrigerator and takes a jug of pink lemonade and a bottle of vodka out.
INT. ELLEN’S LIVING ROOM (TWO NIGHTS LATER) – NIGHT.
Kait and Ellen are “spooning” on the couch.
KAIT So, how many girlfriends have you had?
ELLEN Relationships or one night stands?
KAIT You’re terrible.
MUSIC fades out. Kait closes her eyes and breathes the scent of Ellen’s hair.
ELLEN No, I’ve just had terrible things done to me. I like the way you breathe in my ear.
KAIT What do you mean?
ELLEN I mean don’t stop breathing in my ear. I’m one of those statistics; absentee father, alcoholic mother, abusive brother, a string of abusive relationships, mostly with men. But I’m all better, now.
Ellen slides Kait’s hand onto her breast.
KAIT Oh, god! I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to…
Ellen turns and kisses Kait, pressing her against the couch.
ELLEN Shit happens. I’ve just had a lot happen to me.
33.
CONTINUED:
KAIT Do you want to talk? Maybe it would help.
ELLEN (angry, moves away from
Kait) Help what? Forget? Make years of bullshit disappear? Kait, you’re my friend, not my fucking therapist. Like therapists have ever done me any good. Don’t worry about me, I’m a survivor. I know how to take care of myself. I’m a battle scarred pit bull and you’re the puppy.
KAIT
(deeply shocked) I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to imply that you can’t take care of yourself, it’s just…
ELLEN Kait, you’re very nice. Too nice.
KAIT I don’t know what to say, I like you a lot…
ELLEN
(smiling) I know, things were getting too cozy tonight and I don’t want to get seriously involved. With anyone.
Kait gets off the couch and stands near Ellen, but not touching.
ELLEN (cont’d)
(apologetic) Look, I’m sorry about yelling. I’m a little stressed lately. I’m almost finished my book, and I’ve got to do some writing tonight.
(trying to be reassuring) It’s okay, you can come back, I’m going to be here.
34.
INT. BINO’S RESTAURANT – NIGHT.
David is entrenched in the regular booth. Kait approaches. There is a small creamer temple and a tall empties tower.
DAVID Well, stranger. Where’ve you been?
Kait slides guiltily into the booth. Slowly she flips her cup.
KAIT How’ve ya been, David?
DAVID Horny. I haven’t seen Ellen for two weeks. You’re usually there doing writing stuff or her mother is over there. I never took Ellen for an apron string kinda girl. She seemed so independent.
Kait looks into her empty coffee cup.
KAIT I need coffee.
Kait looks around for a waitress, and, seeing none, gets out of the booth and picks up the pot of coffee at the waitress station. She brings the coffee to the booth and fills her cup and tops off David’s coffee. An OLDER WAITRESS sees Kait pouring her own and comes over to their booth. The waitress takes the coffee pot away from Kait.
WAITRESS You’re not supposed to pour your own coffee.
KAIT If you’d paid attention, I wouldn’t have had to.
WAITRESS I can’t just wait around to pour coffee.
Kait pours a creamer into her coffee and sits down in the booth.
35.
CONTINUED:
KAIT You’re a waitress, the operative word being ‘wait.’
The waitress leaves. David stares at Kait.
DAVID Since when do you drink coffee with cream?
KAIT At Ellen’s, she, uh keeps serving it with milk, and I just switched. Ugh! This is weak.
DAVID It’s the same as it always is. That carburettor cleaner Ellen pretends is coffee needs milk in it just so you can choke it down. You didn’t have to be that rude to the waitress.
KAIT I’m under a lot of pressure lately.
DAVID I know I told you I wanted you to like Ellen, but, I’m your best friend, you’re supposed to hang out with me, not my girlfriend.
KAIT David, I…
DAVID What?
KAIT I don’t know how to tell you. I know what was missing from my sexual encounter, with….
DAVID Kait, slow down. Take a breath. I have no idea what you’re talking about.
KAIT Sex. What I need, who I need, want, I mean.
36.
CONTINUED:
KAIT (cont’d) A revelation, and awakening. Everything makes sense to me now.
DAVID You met a guy? Where? Who? Anyone I know?
KAIT The person I want to be with is a woman.
David looks around.
DAVID Maybe this isn’t the best place to talk about this.
KAIT Why?
DAVID Because we spend a lot of time here, and I don’t think that you want your ..uh …this to be known.
KAIT What the hell is that supposed to mean?
David waves his hands at Kait to get her to quiet down. He leans forward in the booth.
DAVID I just mean have you thought this through? Have you told anyone else? We should go to Stanley Park so we can have some privacy. This is a walk and talk.
Kait stares into her coffee cup.
David slides out of the booth, extends his hand to Kait. She takes it, stands and they exit.
Kait stares at her feet as they leave, David carefully looks around the restaurant.
EXT. STANLEY PARK SEAWALL – LATE AFTERNOON.
An ELDERLY COUPLE are seated on a bench. Kait and David approach, David has his arm around Kait’s shoulders.
37.
CONTINUED:
The elderly couple hold hands and smile as Kait & David walk past them to sit on the next bench.
DAVID I know why I like women.
KAIT My reasons aren’t that different.
DAVID Oh, pluh-eze, Kait. You’re been heterosexual for twenty one years, you’ve slept with one guy and didn’t enjoy it.
The elderly couple get up and walk in the other direction.
DAVID (cont’d) What? For, a week, two weeks, you’re a lesbian? Pretty drastic. I thought you said you were confident in your sexuality.
KAIT (stands up and moves a
little away) So, I mistook confidence for unquestioning. We’re socialized to believe that everyone’s heterosexual, I never thought about it. All the signs that were there, I didn’t recognize them.
David bends down and scoops up some rocks
DAVID What signs?
KAIT I was a tomboy, I had crushes on all of my women teachers all through school. I faked crushes on boys my friends liked. At slumber parties, don’t laugh.
DAVID Laugh at what?
Kait sits down again. David throws a rock.
KAIT It was never my idea, okay?
38.
CONTINUED:
DAVID What wasn’t?
KAIT
We’d practice kissing, only.. it
felt…
DAVID Practised kissing?
KAIT We’d take turns being the boy.
DAVID I’ve never heard anything so silly.
David slips his arm around Kait’s shoulder.
DAVID (cont’d)
I guess this explains why all your
D&D characters are gay. I mean,
most people play the type of
character that they wish they could
be, but sexual orientation isn’t
really covered in the manual.
KAIT
I’m surprised it isn’t, it’s yet
another table to roll on! Table
2035, roll a ten sided die. If you
roll one to nine you’re straight,
if you roll ten, roll under table
2035a. On a four sided die, any
even roll you’re bisexual, roll one
you’re gay, roll three, you’re
transgendered.
DAVID
Hey, cheer up, we can really double
date now. Hey, maybe you, me and
Ellen could, umm. . .
(slaps Kait on the back)
Y’know, Get you some experience
before you get your honey.
Kait runs her hand nervously through her hair.
KAIT Um, no. I…
Kait looks defeated, stands and moves to the water. She scoops up bits of driftwood and sits on a log. David follows.
39.
CONTINUED:
DAVID What? Did I say something wrong?
KAIT (tossing bits of
driftwood) My younger sister was in love with this guy this week, another the next. I went to one school dance. Yearbook photographer. I shot one roll of film in 20 minutes and went home.
David sits beside Kait, cautiously slides an arm around her.
DAVID You never told me that before, and I’m not sure why you’re telling me now, either.
KAIT I didn’t know that I was missing out on anything. My plans never included dating, getting married. I wanted, want, a writing career. I thought that if I ever decided to have kids I’d adopt a ten year old, old enough to dust, y’know.
Kait removes her shoes and socks, one foot at a time, then rolls the socks, placing them in their shoes. Evenly rolling her pant legs, Kait stares at her shoes, then pulls out the socks, unrolls them, and drops them beside the shoes. Kait walks to the water.
DAVID It’s going to be cold.
Kait walks into the water.
DAVID (cont’d) Well, I’m glad you met someone who’s made you give up your plans of not getting involved, because that’s what was sick. Who is she?
KAIT I didn’t ever want you to get hurt, David.
David stands and enters the water, grabbing Kait roughly and spinning her around. Kait limply lets David shake her.
40.
CONTINUED:
DAVID (yelling, shocked) Ellen’s my girlfriend! Mine!
Kait breaks David’s hold. Kait walks forward, forcing David backwards out of the water.
KAIT
(yelling, defensive) I didn’t mean for it to happen, David! I never wanted to fall in love with anyone.
David stops moving. He walks forward, forcing Kait backwards.
DAVID You can’t! I love Ellen! She’s meeting my parents tomorrow night. You didn’t even want to meet her!
KAIT Feelings change!
David stops walking.
DAVID She’s my girlfriend, Kait.
Kait forces David backwards.
KAIT But you weren’t interested in her, she was just a prize to you! You said she was something for you to steal from Greg the Creep! You said as much yourself, David. Be honest.
David stands firmly at the water line, Kait is trapped in the water.
DAVID You’re infatuated. She’s not a prize to me now.
KAIT (running her hand through her hair) No, I’m not. (MORE)
41.
CONTINUED:
KAIT (cont’d) I feel like…Like the world was black and white and, when Ellen came into my life, she flipped a switch and suddenly the world was colour. I never knew what I was missing.
DAVID (stepping backwards) It’s called infatuation.
KAIT
(moving forward) I can see beauty in flowers, and I never gave a flying fuck for flowers before! Haven’t you heard anything that I’ve told you?
DAVID (stopping) Are you going to sleep with her?
KAIT
I. . .It’s not about that. She makes me feel so alive. I never knew I could feel happy like this.
DAVID
(advances) My girlfriend. Not yours or ours, but mine.
KAIT
(retreats) I know that! You don’t have to keep saying that! I’m sorry, David. I don’t want to hurt you, so I have to stop seeing Ellen.
(advances) Except I can’t stop seeing Ellen, because that will hurt me. I don’t know what to do anymore!
Kait stops and drops to her knees in the surf, crying.
DAVID (unsure) You’ll do the right thing, Kait.
He looks around, then slowly approaches her, kneels, and drapes an arm around her. Kait leans against him, crying softly. David holds Kait tightly against his chest. Helplessly, he looks out over the water.
42.
CONTINUED:
DAVID (cont’d) You’ll do what’s best for everybody.
INT. ELLEN’S LIVING ROOM – DAY.
The living room is tidy. Dresser drawers are closed, knickknacks are still ever-present, a new porcelain dragon dominates the dresser.
Kait, with a new and very short haircut, is drinking coffee. Ellen enters.
ELLEN Thanks for taking me shopping. It’s so much easier to get things done with a car. I really should learn how to drive.
KAIT I’ll take you anytime you want. I mean, I like shopping with you.
ELLEN Can you stay for dinner? It’s the least I can do for buying me that beautiful dragon.
KAIT You’re welcome. I’ll help with dinner. What should I do first?
ELLEN How about the dishes?
KAIT Oh, I guess I could.
Ellen playfully hits Kait, Kait grabs her and presses her down on the couch.
Kait hovers over Ellen for a long moment, then slowly lowers her lips to Ellen’s.
Ellen waits, then turns her face away at the last moment. Kait kisses the couch cushion. Kait sits up.
KAIT (cont’d) Well, I guess I’d better do the dishes if you’re gonna make dinner.
43.
CONTINUED:
ELLEN Do you want a kiss?
KAIT Yes.
Ellen motions for Kait to sit beside her. Kait sits. Ellen slides her leg between Kait’s.
Kait swallows, hard. Ellen runs her fingers through Kait’s newly shorn locks.
ELLEN I like it, it makes you look butch.
KAIT It makes me look what?
Ellen presses her lips against Kait’s lips. Kait pulls Ellen close.
Ellen pulls away, then rolls off of Kait, sitting beside her.
ELLEN Butch, I just love domesticated butches.
Kait rises and exits.
Ellen sits back against the couch, and looks at the new dragon. She smiles, very pleased with herself.
The sound of WATER RUNNING and DISHES CLATTERING are heard from the kitchen.
INT. ELLEN’S KITCHEN – 2 NIGHTS LATER Music STARTS PLAYING playing. Kait is washing dishes. A goblet of pink lemonade and vodka sits nearby. Ellen leans in the doorway between the kitchen and living
room with a goblet and a red rose. KAIT Ellen, when did you first, I mean, how did you know you liked women?
44.
CONTINUED:
ELLEN There’s no difference in a relationship with a man than there is with a woman, it all comes down to the same bullshit power games.
Kait pauses her dish washing, and turns to face Ellen.
KAIT That’s not what I meant.
ELLEN I know.
KAIT I’m sorry, is it too personal?
ELLEN From most people, I’d answer yes, but I feel. . . comfortable with you, Kait. Sheila and I were having full contact sex by the time we were fourteen. We figured that we were smarter than everyone and that no one would ever know. It was our downfall.
KAIT How did it end?
ELLEN Like all relationships. Badly. Her mom found out and they moved. She never wrote to me. At least I never got any letters. I’d rather blame her mother.
Ellen lays the rose down, then quietly steps beside Kait. Sliding her arms around Kait, Ellen kisses her on the back of the neck.
ELLEN (cont’d) I have some new pages, when you finish the dishes, I’ll let you read them to me.
KAIT Gosh, do I get to make the coffee too?
45.
CONTINUED:
ELLEN Only if you’re good. And if you’re really good, I’ll let you make love to me again.
Kait washes the dishes in greater earnest.
Ellen moves towards the living room, pausing to pick up her rose and goblet. She turns in the doorway for a moment and looks at Kait.
Kait runs a wet hand through her hair, then realizing that she’s wrecked her hair, looks around for a dish towel. She looks in Ellen’s direction, but Ellen has exited to the living room.
INT. KAIT’S LIVING ROOM – NIGHT.
The living room is tidy. A lamp in the corner is on. The coffee table is still strewn with D&D paraphernalia. Kait’s notebook is beside a computer on a desk in the corner. Each page has a diagonal red line through them. The door unlocks.
David and Don enter. David turns on the lights. The answering machine light is blinking.
DON Why do you have a key to Kait’s?
DAVID Cause I’m Kait’s best friend.
David pokes around the D&D stuff, then notices her notepad. He flips through the pages.
DAVID (cont’d) Looks like Kait’s writing a les…novel. Do you know how to use a computer, Don?
DON Of course I do, when I’m not being a science fiction dweeb, I dabble as a compugeek. If Kait has passwords, it’ll take a couple of minutes to crack them, unless you a know a word she’s likely to use.
DAVID Nevermind then.
46.
CONTINUED:
David presses the play button on the answering machine.
DON You shouldn’t….
DAVID Kait hasn’t been talking to me much lately, and I want to find out what’s up. It’s lower tech than her computer, of course, but, in a pinch, sometimes that’s a bit more direct.
DON If you played thieves instead of fighter-magic users, I’d probably give you extra experience points for this.
ANSWERING MACHINE BEEP: Kait, it’s Mom. Don’t forget about dinner on Sunday. Call if you can’t make it, bye Sweetie. BEEP: Hey Kait! It’s Don. You gaming this week or what? I need to know if we’re playing at your place. Call me call me call me!!! BEEP: (Ellen) Kait, I’ve got more pages you can read to me, and pick up some coffee, I’m out. Can you get that flavoured one again?
DON Do I really sound like that?
DAVID Can you drop me off, Don? I’m going to Ellen’s. I’m sick of all this sneaking around.
DON Does this mean we aren’t going to the arcade?
DAVID You have a wonderful grasp of the obvious.
47.
INT. ELLEN’S LIVING ROOM – LATER NIGHT. Ellen is sitting against Kait; their dinner plates on the floor. The MUSIC TAPE ENDS. ELLEN One of us should get up and flip the tape. Kait smiles and kisses Ellen’s temple. ELLEN (cont’d) Maybe one of us could make coffee while one of us is up flipping the tape.
KAIT Your bitch is my command. Ellen sits up and twists around to face Kait.
ELLEN My what? KAIT (teasingly) You heard me. Kait leans forward quickly and tickles Ellen. ELLEN
Stop! Stop it! Unnoticed, David peers into the window. Kait tickles and kisses Ellen. David disappears. Ellen kisses Kait and mock flails at her. A KNOCK. They freeze.
KAIT Where you expecting someone?
ELLEN No, people just drop by, I keep telling them to phone first. It’s annoying. Kiss me quick, Kait!
Kait kisses Ellen, then Ellen goes to answer the door.
48.
CONTINUED:
Kait walks to the stereo, flips the tape, then moves to the typewriter and stares at Ellen’s manuscript.
DAVID (O.S.) I was in the neighbourhood, I thought I’d drop in.
ELLEN (O.S.) Oh, sure, come in David. Kait and I were just. . .
Kait picks up the manuscript, then sits on the couch and arranges the pages as if she and Ellen had been reading them.
David enters confrontationally. Ellen enters.
Kait picks up a goblet and drinks.
ELLEN (cont’d) That one is mine.
KAIT Sorry.
Kait places the goblet on the floor.
DAVID So, new haircut, Kait?
KAIT (holding the pages as a
shield) The haircut is almost two weeks old, David.
DAVID Missed you at the last couple of socials, people have been asking about you, Kait. I’ve told them you’re working on term papers.
KAIT (reshuffles the manuscript
pages) Well, that’s sort of true. I’ve been helping Ellen edit her manuscript for a competition.
David places the books on Ellen’s stereo cabinet.
49.
CONTINUED:
DAVID I haven’t heard any of Ellen’s new pages for a while, so I’ll join you. Kait can read for the technical writing angles, and I can read for the emotional impact and storyline.
Kait and Ellen exchange guilty glances. David becomes combative.
ELLEN Ummm.
KAIT You don’t have the patience for more than twenty pages, David, and we’ve hit a pretty good stride. Besides, you haven’t heard any pages in awhile, you’re too far behind, and backtracking at this point…
DAVID So I supposed you’d rather not catch me up on the story and stay in stride, huh?
KAIT The three of us can do something another night. Something we all enjoy.
DAVID Well, we could play Dungeons & Dragons. We all enjoy that. Give me a minute and I’ll…
KAIT Ellen and I are writing.
DAVID
(to Ellen) Yeah, well, I have a lot of friends who would be happy to include me, so I’ll just go see one.
David stomps out angrily. Ellen follows.
Kait picks up the goblet again and drains it, then follows.
50.
FRONT ROOM
David opens the door and Ellen grabs him. He turns to face her.
ELLEN Don’t leave mad.
DAVID How am I supposed to leave? You’re in there with my best friend, who, I might add, has a big crush on you; and you’re making me leave? Just whose girlfriend are you?
David crosses his arms. Ellen backs away.
ELLEN You don’t own me David. Nobody owns me or controls who I spend my time with. Kait is just a friend. Kait is helping me edit my manuscript for a competition. I won’t need her here after the deadline. You wanted me to be friends with her.
DAVID How am I supposed to compete?
ELLEN I’m not a prize. There is no competition here. I’m dating you and she’s helping me with my book.
Ellen snuggles up to David. He stiffens, then slides his arms around her. They kiss.
ELLEN (cont’d) Come back tomorrow night, okay, with strawberries?
DAVID And whipped cream?
ELLEN Okay. Nine? You won’t be sorry.
Ellen nods. David leaves. Ellen closes and bolts the door. She leans against it, eyes closed. She exhales loudly.
51.
ELLEN’S KITCHEN
Kait, after eavesdropping, creeps back to the living room.
ELLEN’S LIVING ROOM
Kait places the manuscript pages back. Ellen enters and plunks down on the couch.
KAIT Maybe I should go after him.
ELLEN Why? You’ll see him later.
KAIT I think I really hurt his feelings. David is used to us hanging out all the time. . .
ELLEN Kait, you’ve got more important things to do than drink coffee in coffee shops.
Ellen snuggles up to Kait. Kait does not move away, but she stares stonily at the manuscript.
ELLEN (cont’d) Look, what we get up to isn’t anyone’s business but ours. No one needs to know. Look, no one controls me anymore. Maybe you should go after David.
KAIT What? I’m not trying to control you, I’m just trying to make sure no one gets hurt.
ELLEN David and I aren’t dating. You and I aren’t dating. Craig and I aren’t dating. It’s all just friends. No one gets hurt.
KAIT Who is Craig?
52.
CONTINUED:
ELLEN The married man I see once in a while. I told you that David wasn’t the only guy I was seeing.
KAIT Oh. I’m thinking of telling my parents I’m a lesbian.
ELLEN Why?
KAIT Because they keep asking me what I’m doing. I’d like to be able to introduce…someone to them. If I tell them now, then when I introduce them to a woman it won’t be that big a shock. It’ll be easier on everyone. Besides, I’m close with my parents and I don’t like this having to hide something as important as being a lesbian.
ELLEN Well, if you’re that sure, then there’s some books you can get to help them and you. A good one for parents is called, “Now that you know”. Little Sister’s carries it.
KAIT What’s Little Sister’s?
ELLEN A gay and lesbian bookstore, it’s on Davie Street. The West End of Vancouver is gay central.
KAIT I didn’t know there was a gay area of town. Did you give your mom that book when you told her you’re bisexual?
ELLEN I never told her. She wouldn’t understand.
KAIT Why not?
53.
CONTINUED:
ELLEN Most parents, you might find this hard to believe, don’t want their kids to be gay.
KAIT I know that being gay isn’t socially approved of, but when it’s your own kid. . .
ELLEN Why should a fag or dyke be any more acceptable because it’s your own kid. Almost all of my gay friends were kicked out of their families.
KAIT I can’t believe parents can be like that.
ELLEN That’s cause you come from a nice family. At least until you tell your parents. They might not be so nice.
KAIT You don’t even know my parents.
Ellen softens a bit.
ELLEN Look, I don’t want to fight with you. I just think that you should hold off telling your parents. Besides, it’s not any of their business. Anyone’s business, really.
KAIT I want my parents to be a part of my life, that includes knowing who I’m dating. And having that person come to my families’ functions, Christmas, like that.
ELLEN Well, it’s been my experience that even nice parents aren’t so nice when they find out that their child is queer.
54.
CONTINUED:
ELLEN (cont’d) Parent’s don’t like when their kids aren’t what they think is normal. I’ve seen dotting mothers turn vicious on their lesbian daughters. I think you’d have a hard time not having mommy and daddy’s approval.
(a beat) Oh, never mind me. David’s really upset me. I don’t like people showing up hostile. It frightens me. I don’t mean to take it out on you.
Ellen picks up the fuller of the goblets and drains it. Kait smiles, the tension faintly dispersed. They kiss.
ELLEN (cont’d) Stay here tonight. I’m afraid that David might be lingering outside, waiting for you to leave. He might try to come back. I’ve never felt as safe with anyone as I feel with you. Please stay?
Kait reaches over and holds Ellen.
KAIT I’ll always be here for you, Ellen. But I don’t see David doing something like that.
Ellen stiffens for a moment, when Kait does not continue, Ellen relaxes into the embrace.
ELLEN Hard to know what people will do when they’re mad. Hey, why don’t you grab my pages and keep reading? Where were we before we were so rudely interrupted.
Kait blinks a moment, and then mechanically reaches for the pages. They settle back on the couch.
INT. KAIT’S LIVINGROOM – NIGHT.
The room is set up for the Dungeons & Dragons game as in scene one. Don, Brad, Gabriella are on the couch, David and Kait are in chairs.
55.
CONTINUED:
DON
Because we haven’t played in a
while, I’d just like to recap from
my notes. The party’s cleaned out
the orc tribe that was infesting
Cirel’s Citadel, overlooking the
small town of Beeblerville.
Ilsolth, Roeena and Aloe are lodged
at the hotel, while Dolph and Iron
Swilldrinker have spent the night
at Fanny Fucher’s Friction
Funhouse.
BRAD
(giggling, to Gabriella)
Have you ever had a Dungeon Master
name the town brothel before?
GABRIELLA
No, but I’ve had a Dungeon Master
who named his…
DON
A-HEM. To continue, Iron
Swilldrinker is now in the local
infirmary after drinking Fanny’s
perfume, and Dolph returned to the
hotel. Kait, raise your comeliness
points to eighteen for the next
four months of game time. Fanny’s
perfume was enchanted.
DAVID
You mean our party now has a
beautiful fifteen foot tall
alcoholic dwarf?
DON U-huh.
KAIT Jealous?
DAVID
(pointedly)
Not at all, the attractiveness
wears off, Kait, it’s only a
temporary situation.
While David and Kait glare at each other, Don, Brad and Gabriella exchange nervous glances.
56.
INT. BINO’S RESTAURANT – NIGHT.
Kait sits nervously in a booth in the smoking section. She pulls her fingers through the front of her hair, seeing how short it really is. Her wallet and glasses rest on the table. The ashtray is full of butts. Kait is writing in a notebook.
Jessie approaches with a coffee pot.
JESSIE Haven’t seen you in a few weeks. Alone tonight?
KAIT Yeah, David is with . . . he’s busy.
JESSIE I thought you and David were a couple.
KAIT Oh, god no! We’re just friends.
Kait drinks from her newly filled coffee cup. Burning her lip, she quickly puts the cup down, spilling coffee.
KAIT (cont’d) Christ! I burned myself!
JESSIE I just made it, want a milkshake?
KAIT Sure. Strawberry? Thanks.
Jessie turns to leave.
KAIT (cont’d) Jessie?
Jessie turns back to Kait.
JESSIE Anything else?
KAIT What do you think of a person who sleeps with a friend’s girlfriend?
57.
CONTINUED:
JESSIE That the person and the girlfriend are rats.
KAIT What if the friend loves the girlfriend more?
JESSIE I guess the friend has to decide who’s more important, the best friend or the girlfriend.
KAIT Who would you pick, a friend or a lover?
JESSIE Friends last longer.
Jessie tops up Kait’s cup, then leaves.
KAIT
(staring into coffee) But what if the lover is a friend, too?
BINO’S RESTAURANT, CASHIER’S COUNTER
David enters. He pauses and scans the restaurant. He is relieved to see Kait. Taking a deep breath, he walks towards Kait’s booth.
BOOTH
David watches Kait stare into her coffee for a moment. She is unaware of his presence.
DAVID Coffee that bad?
KAIT
(looking up startled) Hullo. I was just thinking about you.
DAVID I want to know what you think is happening between you and Ellen.
58.
CONTINUED:
KAIT Look, David…
DAVID
You owe me, Kait. You really hurt
me the other night. If you were a
guy, and you did what you’re doing,
we’d be in the parking lot right
now.
KAIT I expected better from you.
DAVID
Right back to you. I keep giving
you chances to talk. You avoid
them. Fighting allows us to work
out frustrations so we can talk
reasonably after. Your choice. We
can work out our frustrations and
talk or you can skip the beating
and talk now. Your choice.
KAIT Please, sit down.
David sits, looking expectantly at Kait. She avoids looking directly at him for a moment.
DAVID Well?
KAIT I can’t even explain it to myself.
DAVID
Eeeeh. Wrong answer. What I can’t
get over is that you didn’t even
want to meet her, and now, it’s
like she’s consumed your every
waking moment.
KAIT
I don’t want to fight with you,
David.
DAVID Too late.
59.
CONTINUED:
KAIT I’m attracted to her. Ellen says what we do isn’t any of your business.
DAVID How can it not be my business?
KAIT Ask Ellen, it made sense when she explained it.
DAVID Ellen’s not interested in you romantically.
KAIT What makes you say that?
DAVID I asked her. She said she likes you as a friend.
Kait dips her index finger into her coffee, then sucks the coffee off of her fingertip.
KAIT Why did you ask her?
DAVID You’re not talking to me, I had to ask Ellen. I have a right to know, you know.
Kait looks into her coffee, idly stirring it.
DAVID (cont’d) Kait, we’ve always been able to talk about everything. I don’t want to lose that. Ellen told me she only flirted with you so you’d help her with that writing competition.
KAIT She told you this?
DAVID Ellen is not planning to see you when the contest is over. What I have with her. . .
60.
CONTINUED:
KAIT
You have nothing! You chased her to
boost your ego, just to chalk up
another notch. Be honest with
yourself. Ellen knows it, too; but
you were a notch for her too. How’s
that feel?
DAVID
I’m surprised you can pronounce a
word like honest. What the hell are
you to her then?
KAIT
There’s nothing she can get from
you that any guy can’t give her.
She tells me stuff about herself
that she’s never told anyone. Ellen
and I click on so many levels, and
sharing our writing is just one of
them. Maybe she just said she was
using me for the competition to
soothe your ego.
DAVID
Why she told me doesn’t matter,
Kait. The fact is she did, and if
you can think of saying it, then
you’re capable of doing it, too.
You can’t dispute that I was seeing
Ellen first and the least you could
have done was wait till she and I
were over before moving in. You’re
supposed to be my friend.
Kait picks her wallet, glasses, cigarettes, and bill from the table. She gets out of the booth.
KAIT
How come when you say that I’ll do
what’s best for everyone that it
sounds like you want me to do
what’s best for you?
Kait raises her hands in surrender.
KAIT (cont’d)
I can’t talk to you right now. I
need to be..
DAVID With Ellen?
61.
CONTINUED:
KAIT Fuck you. Fuck you and fuck your friendship and fuck your warped sense of fair play. I won’t be the villain here for falling in love with the woman you got a trophy fuck from.
Kait exits.
David stands to go after her, slams his fist down on the table, knocking over the ashtray. David pushes the ashtray to the opposite end of the table, then sits down.
Jessie appears with a coffee pot. She leans over the table and tips an upended cup upright and pours David coffee.
JESSIE You look like…
DAVID I just lost my best friend?
Jessie looks around, and not seeing her supervisor, leans closer.
JESSIE She’s been here for hours, brooding and asking me weird questions.
DAVID She just won’t listen to reason, I don’t need this shit.
INT. ELLEN’S LIVING ROOM – NIGHT.
Kait and Ellen are sitting on the couch. Kait is crying.
KAIT I just don’t know what to do anymore. Everything I do just… falls apart…
Ellen awkwardly hugs Kait to comfort her. Ellen is obviously uncomfortable with this type of physical contact.
ELLEN Well, what’s happened that everything is falling apart for you?
62.
CONTINUED:
KAIT Ellen, I… I’m only really happy when I’m with you. When I’m not here, I’m thinking of you.
Ellen sits up and moves away from Kait.
KAIT (cont’d) I’m sorry, I shouldn’t be whining like this.
ELLEN No, it’s okay, Kait. I think about you when you’re not here, it’s normal. I’ve made quite the impact on your life.
Ellen lights a cigarette and exhales slowly.
ELLEN (cont’d) I hadn’t really thought of what the consequences might be. Maybe you should spend more time with other people.
KAIT All my other friends just want pieces of me. Help me, solve this, fix that for me! We talk. You really make me think and question everything; my values, my beliefs. I need that kind of challenge.
Ellen slips off of the couch and grabs her manuscript pages.
ELLEN Speaking of challenges, can you help me write this sword fight scene? It doesn’t ring true to me, and since you play Dungeons & Dragons so much. . .
INT. KAIT’S LIVING ROOM – DAY.
The living room is overly organized and clean. Magazines (D&D, computers, photography) and comic collections sit on the coffee table. By Kait’s computer is a print out of a manuscript in progress.
The apartment door is open. Kait is re-stacking the coffee table books. There is a knock at the door.
63.
CONTINUED:
KAIT Ellen?
DAVID (O.S.) It’s David.
David opens the door & enters.
KAIT Um, hi.
DAVID Can I come in? We need to talk.
KAIT I’m, uh, kinda busy right now. Ellen’s coming over, and we’re going out for dinner.
DAVID You don’t have time for anyone except Ellen.
KAIT That’s not fair.
DAVID You don’t know what fair is, Kait.
KAIT Why are you doing this to me?
DAVID The only person being done is me.
KAIT You don’t understand anything.
DAVID You used to think I was a good person to talk to, before Ellen. Remember?
Kait slumps inward.
KAIT I’m sorry. I never meant for it to happen. I’m sorry about what I said at Bino’s. It was really unfair. I don’t know what’s happening, everything’s moving so fast. . .
64.
CONTINUED:
DAVID You’ve slept together.
KAIT Yes, and before you ask, for several weeks now and yes, more than once.
DAVID I’ve already asked. Why did you wait until I dragged it out of you?
KAIT
(sitting) David, you have no idea how guilty I feel.
DAVID Obviously not guilty enough to tell me. Or stop.
KAIT David, please, this is hard enough for me.
DAVID (pacing) You think it’s easy for me?
KAIT I do think it’s easier for you.
DAVID (stunned) What?
KAIT Are you going to interrupt me?
David sits on the couch with a bow and a hand wave to Kait. Kait stands and paces the room.
KAIT (cont’d) First, I didn’t believe you cared deeply for Ellen. Let me finish. You said she was a prize. I thought that since you cared more about getting her than having her that it wouldn’t hurt you to lose her. I’m the queen of rationalisation.
Kait takes a deep breath. Kait sits sideways, facing David.
65.
CONTINUED:
DAVID This better be good.
KAIT Romance comes so easy to you, you’ve often said it’s just a game to you. I’ve never felt this way about anyone. And I’m scared I’ll never find anyone else that makes me feel this way. And I don’t want to. I can’t give Ellen up.
DAVID How can you trust her. She’s cheating on me with you. Who’s she’s cheating on you with?
KAIT Ellen said upfront that she’s not monogamous. It was safe to flirt with her since I wasn’t risking getting slapped in the face. You flirt with Gabriella, and all the waitresses at Bino’s. Even when you thought you and Ellen were ‘committed.’ Why should the rules be different for me. Besides, I thought she’d say no.
DAVID Okay you got me on the flirting, I guess I would be sort of stuck if Jessie had said yes, but, why hit on someone you think will say no?
KAIT Don’t forget you wanted me to join the two of you. I flirted so I could flex my flirt muscles without getting in over my head. Only it didn’t work that way. It was. . . it was just this sign that seemed to say ‘Your destiny.’
DAVID Well, there was one sign, but it wasn’t ‘Your Destiny.’ It was ‘Available.’
Kait slugs David. He pretends to be hurt, and rubs his arm.
66.
CONTINUED:
KAIT You know what I mean.
David smiles and slugs Kait back on the upper arm. She rubs her arm, but doesn’t complain that it does hurt.
DAVID I dunno, Kait. Maybe you were destined to meet Ellen, after all, she helped you figure out your sexuality, and she’s got you writing again. You’re just different from the person you used to be. Has Ellen changed you that much?
KAIT (slumps into the couch) I don’t know myself any more.
DAVID You mean more to me than Ellen does. Why didn’t you tell me sooner? I could have backed off, but you never gave me a chance.
KAIT I tried. It’s not easy, especially since you’re part of the competition for her. I was afraid, ashamed, to face you. I didn’t know how to tell you. I guess I thought that if you didn’t know, it wouldn’t hurt you.
DAVID I’m hurt by your not telling me, not by your sleeping with Ellen. I’m glad you found someone to like, and I’da preferred it wasn’t someone I slept with, but that’s life. Is she worth it?
KAIT I don’t understand.
DAVID Are you happy knowing you’ll hurt anyone to keep her? Are you happy knowing Ellen has that much control over you?
67.
CONTINUED:
Kait gets off of the couch and angrily approaches David.
KAIT Ellen isn’t in control of me. I decide if I want to buy her dinner or gifts, not Ellen.
DAVID Look, I just wanted you to be honest with me. That’s why I came over. I can live with loosing Ellen. I’ve swiped enough girls from friends, that maybe it’s my comeuppance. It’s not easy to lose your girl to another girl, but I don’t want to loose you. Friends are too hard to come by.
KAIT Are we still? Even after I. . .
DAVID What do skeleton keys open?
KAIT I don’t know, what?
DAVID Undead Bolts!
Kait laughs. David smiles at her, the tension gone from his stance. Kait stands, and they hug.
DAVID (cont’d) Well, you’re expecting Ellen any minute now, so I’ll leave.
(stepping away from Kait) We haven’t resolved everything, Kait. I’m still hurt. Meet me at Bino’s tomorrow, 8pm?
KAIT I’ll be there, pal. I’m sorry.
They hug.
The DOORBELL RINGS.
David glances over Kait’s shoulder. Kait breaks off the hug and answers the door.
68.
CONTINUED:
Ellen enters and is shocked to see David. She looks at Kait. Kait smiles weakly.
KAIT (cont’d) Come in. You look wonderful. Thank you.
ELLEN Hello, David.
Ellen walks towards David. David moves to the door without touching her.
DAVID Have a nice dinner. See ya, Kait.
David exits.
ELLEN How much does he know?
KAIT I just confirmed what he’d been thinking.
ELLEN That we’ve been having sex?
Kait nods nervously. Ellen considers this turn of events.
ELLEN (cont’d) Was it a problem for David? I never told him about Craig, I didn’t think he’d understand quite frankly. I’m seeing David tomorrow, did he tell you? Was he angry? Do I need some advance warning?
KAIT There’s not much to tell. Ellen, as you have told me, it isn’t any of my business that you see other people. It’s not David’s business, either. He understands that now. He’s okay about us.
(laughs self-mockingly) Although, one time, before he knew, he asked if I would join the two of you. That was before he knew that we had, um already. . .
69.
CONTINUED:
ELLEN Well, my threesome days are over. Hard enough with two people to decide who sleeps on the wet spot.
Ellen looks around at how tidy and spartan Kait’s place is. She bites her inner lip, felling very out of place.
ELLEN (cont’d) Kait, look, David’s kinda put me off going out, can you just take me back to my place?
KAIT
(Surprises) Oh, um, I suppose. I’ll just, ah, call and cancel the restaurant.
Kait moves towards the phone, robotically.
ELLEN
ELLEN (cont’d)
(Brightly) Thanks, you’re a real pal. It’s such a hassle travelling two ways on the bus. I just, I’ve been writing a lot and I’m a lot more tired than I thought I was.
Ellen moves seductively closer. Kait melts a bit, and hangs up the phone, without calling.
ELLEN (cont’d) I’m really sorry, I’ll make it up to you.
KAIT Sure, just let me get my keys and lock this joint up.
Keys JANGLE
EXT. ELLEN’S HOUSE – NIGHT.
Keys JANGLE as Ellen pulls her keys out of her purse. Ellen turns to face Kait. Ellen leans close to Kait and briefly kisses her on the cheek.
70.
CONTINUED:
ELLEN Thank you for the ride, Kait. I’ll call you next weekend?
KAIT But I thought…
ELLEN No, I’m tired. You can come in next time. Thanks for taking me home.
Kait leans forward to kiss Ellen. Instead, Ellen touches Kait’s cheek. Kait opens her eyes, then steps slightly back.
KAIT Ellen, I. . .I like you very much. I love . . . spending time with you.
Ellen’s hand drops back to her side.
ELLEN I hope you’ll remember me kindly in five years.
KAIT (smiling, not
understanding) Well, I hope I’ll be doing more than remembering.
ELLEN Kait, I like you and I like being with you.
(leaning against the door
frame) But, I need time for myself. And so do you. You are moving in directions that I’m not prepared to go. I don’t want to marry you Kait. If it’s any consolation, I can’t see me married to anyone.
KAIT (backing away from Ellen) You’re dumping me?
71.
CONTINUED:
ELLEN No, I’m not saying we’re over. I’m saying I need room to breathe, and you need to see other people, friends, if not other romantic interests. I won’t be the only one in your life.
KAIT But, Ellen you’re not. . .
ELLEN
(raising her hand) Yes, I am and I don’t want to be. I like you Kait, I need time to think about our relationship and so do you. I’ll call you.
KAIT Can I at least have a hug?
ELLEN No. It’s gotten too complicated, look, I need some time back to myself. I’ll call you.
Ellen unlocks her door and enters her house. Door closing wipes camera.
INT. KAIT’S LIVING ROOM – NIGHT.
Kait is writing at her computer. There in an untouched cup of coffee on the desk.
INT. BINO’S RESTAURANT – NIGHT.
Kait sits in the regular booth. Several creamer containers are stacked in pyramids.
Kait knocks the stack over and begins rebuilding. ECHO DOOR SLAM as pyramid collapses near a note pad that Kait has been writing on.
Jessie comes over with coffee.
KAIT Thank you, Jessie.
Jessie turns and walks away.
72.
CONTINUED:
KAIT (cont’d) Jessie?
JESSIE (turning around) Do you want to order something?
KAIT No, I wanted to talk to…
JESSIE Sorry, we’re not allowed to talk too long with customers.
Jessie walks away, smiling warmly at David off camera.
Kait finishes her creamer pyramid, then picks up the bill, her glasses and wallet. Kait stands.
DAVID So what’s a dyke girl like you doing in a hetero place like this?
KAIT (sits down, startled) Can I ask why you’re late?
DAVID No, but I’ll tell you anyways. I was at Ellen’s.
(sitting down) Riding the busses takes time, but I am able to leave Ellen to fulfil other commitments.
KAIT (barely holding back
tears) Look, David, if it makes you feel better, Ellen told me not to call. She doesn’t want to see me for a while.
DAVID That explains why she finally called me. I was going to play with you, but you’re really not up for it.
KAIT After what I did. . .
73.
CONTINUED:
David holds Kait’s hands.
DAVID Why don’t you tell me what happened and I’ll refrain from saying I told you so. Ellen can fuck herself, she’s a user. In fact, I stood her up, I’ve been at the arcade with Don.
Kait bursts into tears, unable to hold back any longer. David gets up and sits in the booth beside Kait and holds her.
KAIT
(sobbing violently) I ignored all my principles to be with her! I gave up so much and she says not to call her.
David holds Kait while she cries. Soon, Kait is dry sobbing against David’s chest.
DAVID Do you know why she said not to call?
KAIT Because things were moving too fast. I need Kleenex. Excuse me.
DAVID No, I’ll get you some.
David slips out of the booth and heads for the bathroom.
Kait sips her coffee and tries to regain her composure.
David returns with a handful of toilet paper. Kait takes it and blows her nose.
KAIT (laughing bitterly) You always know just what I need.
DAVID Yeah, a different girlfriend.
KAIT Yeah, right, you know happen to know kd lang?
David reaches across the table an holds Kait’s hand.
74.
CONTINUED:
KAIT (cont’d) At least you know I’m not crazy, I still have a sense of humour.
DAVID Talk to me. Tell Uncle David all the lurid details, and don’t skip the lick by lick, and I’ll forgive you.
KAIT I’ll give you the general outline of what happened, I’m not telling you what happened on the couch. I can’t talk about that.
INT. KAIT’S LIVING ROOM – NIGHT.
Kait is writing her novel – transferring the scribblings on the notepad to the computer.
Sound of COMPUTER TYPING continues intermittently until we see Kait making out the envelope to the publisher.
EXT. SEAWALL AT STANLEY PARK – LATE AFTERNOON.
David and Kait are sitting on a bench, watching the waves break on the beach. Kait is pale and needs sleep.
KAIT I should have known that I would be dumped as easily as she dumped you. I don’t know why I thought she would treat me any different.
Tears flow freely down Kait’s face. David holds Kait’s hand.
DAVID I guess neither of us meant that much to her. She told me there was a person that she had loved, who broke her heart in the past, so don’t expect anything. Funny how I had assumed it was a guy.
KAIT Sheila, her girlfriend in high school.
75.
CONTINUED:
DAVID Well, I think that that’s a lousy excuse to avoid responsibility for her actions. You’re better off away from her, Kait. Let’s hit the arcades, you can work out some frustrations there.
Kait nods unenthusiastically. David stands and pulls Kait to her feet. He leads her off the path into the woods.
INT. KAIT’S LIVING ROOM – NIGHT.
Kait is writing on the computer. She stops and looks at one of those mall photo strips of four pictures of her and Ellen. She places the photo strip in a drawer, out of sight, and continues typing.
There is a cup of herbal tea on the desk.
INT. BINO’S RESTAURANT – NIGHT.
Kait has her face against the table.
Brad looks helpless at David.
David smiles at Jessie.
Jessie pours coffee, looking sympathetically at Kait. Jessie leaves.
DAVID Ellen doesn’t care about anyone but herself.
Kait is drinking herbal tea, David and Brad are drinking coffee.
KAIT She made me think that she cared about me.
BRAD You don’t need her, Kait, you’ve got us, we care about you.
Kait smiles at Brad. He looks hopeful.
76.
CONTINUED:
KAIT She talked me out of coming out to my parents.
DAVID Why? I thought you had a good relationship with them. You’re mom is always nice to me.
KAIT I think my Mom suspected, she actually asked me if I was a lesbian, because of all the time I was spending with Ellen.
BRAD What’d you say?
KAIT The truth. That me and David were fighting because I slept with his girlfriend.
Brad looks crushed.
DAVID What’d your mom say?
KAIT She said it was okay if I was a lesbian as long as I was happy. She said she’d been wondering for a while about me, before Ellen. I never was interested in boys or make up or any of that teenage girl stuff.
DAVID So Ellen was totally wrong. She just didn’t want to meet your parents or be part of your family. She ducked out of meeting mine, too. That probably doesn’t help, but it’s true.
Kait gets up and paces in aisle.
KAIT I don’t know why I just can’t let go. I’m just not happy anywhere anymore. Let’s go to the park, I need to walk.
77.
CONTINUED:
David gulps his coffee and throws some money on the table. Kait hands it back to him and leaves her own money on the table.
KAIT (cont’d) The least I can do is pay for the coffee and tea.
Brad looks into his coffee cup.
BRAD I’m not feeling like fresh air, I’m gonna hit the arcade. Are we gaming Friday?
David looks at Kait. She shrugs.
DAVID See ya at Kait’s on Friday.
Kait touches Brad’s shoulder. He melts a bit into her touch.
KAIT See ya Friday.
Brad, slumping a bit, watches them exit.
EXT. STANLEY PARK SEAWALL – LATE AFTERNOON.
Kait’s hair is unwashed and uncombed, her face is drawn and pale and she is on the brink of exhaustion. David looks tired.
KAIT I feel like I was an ego boost for her. You know, she told me that she hadn’t slept with a virgin. I hate to think that I’m going through all of this so that she could add another bedpost notch.
DAVID I told you, she’s a user. That’s what she does.
KAIT Well, she can’t be that good a user.
DAVID Why?
78.
CONTINUED:
KAIT Because you figured her out and left. I saw her treat you badly, and I knew about Craig, but I didn’t relate that to me.
DAVID Who’s Craig?
KAIT Some married guy. I never met him, apparently it’s just for sex, he doesn’t pay her rent or anything.
DAVID Well, if she doesn’t get better benefits than that, she’s not as good a manipulator as I thought. Doesn’t he even buy her presents?
KAIT No, I guess his wife would find out then.
DAVID
(shaking his head) Well, that’s what happens when amateurs try to play in the big leagues. If you’re gonna manipulate people, at least keep the ones who buy you presents. Remember that.
KAIT Here’s a sick thought, in a way, I wish she still was using me.
DAVID Why would you want that?
KAIT Because I’d still be oblivious to her using me, and I wouldn’t hurt as much as I am now, being without her.
David punches Kait on the arm.
DAVID You’d just be in for a bigger hurt
later.
79.
CONTINUED:
KAIT I just don’t want to feel. . .
INT. BINO’S RESTAURANT – NIGHT.
Kait is worse than before and David’s hair is unwashed. Kait builds the creamer temple.
KAIT . . . like this anymore.
DAVID You have got to forget her Kait. You are wearing me out. You are so much better off without her, and you still don’t realize it.
KAIT No, we can work it out. Ellen said she just wanted a break, not an ending. When is she going to call? It’s been over two weeks.
DAVID We’ve been here long enough, let’s go to the park.
INT. BINO’S PARKING LOT – NIGHT.
David holds Kait’s hand while they walk. David stops and holds his arms out. They hug. Kait sobs, slides down David’s body to her knees and cries, uncontrollably, against the cold pavement. David watches helpless, then pulls Kait to her feet. David supports her as they walk to the car.
DAVID Stay here, I’m going to get you some Kleenex.
David heads back to the restaurant.
Kait nods. She leans against the trunk and tries to gain control of herself. Unable to regain control, Kait slides to her knees, her head resting against the trunk.
A SECURITY GUARD (East Indian male, 35) walks over.
GUARD Are you alright?
80.
CONTINUED:
KAIT No, but I will be.
GUARD What’s wrong?
KAIT I got dumped. First love.
The guard’s face softens.
GUARD Be brave.
The guard continues his rounds. Kait stands unsteadily.
INT. BINO’S RESTAURANT, CASHIER’S COUNTER – NIGHT.
David is using the pay phone. Jessie is lingering at the till.
DAVID Ellen, you have to call Kait tomorrow.
ELLEN (VOICE) Why didn’t you come over?
DAVID I already told you, I’m not ever coming over. I’m only calling because my best friend is in pain. You don’t deserve her.
David smiles at Jessie. Jessie smiles back and comes onto the customer’s side of the till.
DAVID (cont’d) Ellen?
ELLEN (VOICE) My other line is beeping.
DAVID Ellen!
ELLEN (VOICE) Look, I didn’t want anyone to get hurt. It’s not my fault.
81.
CONTINUED:
DAVID Fault is not the issue. You told Kait you want her as a friend. Tell her you can’t be just her friend and let her go. Tell her anything. It’s not fair to leave her twisting the way she is.
ELLEN (VOICE) I have to get my other line.
Ellen hangs up. David stares at the receiver in shock.
DAVID (hangs up, shrugs at Jessie) Bitch!
JESSIE Evil ex?
David nods, smiles at Jessie, then exits grimly to the parkade.
INT. KAIT’S LIVING ROOM – NIGHT.
David, Brad, Don and Gabriella are playing D&D.
Kait is staring out the window, not paying attention.
INT. KAIT’S KITCHEN – DAY.
Kait is addressing a thick envelope to a publisher at the kitchen table. A half bottle of vodka sits within easy reach. The phone RINGS. Kait answers after the second ring.
KAIT Hello?
ELLEN (VOICE) Hello, it’s Ellen.
KAIT (shocked) Hello.
ELLEN (VOICE) You said that already.
82.
CONTINUED:
KAIT Oh.
ELLEN (VOICE) Look, Kait, I’ve done a lot of thinking and we need to talk and it’s better that we don’t do it over the phone.
KAIT (hesitant) Yes.
ELLEN (VOICE) Do you want to come over tonight?
KAIT
(getting a grip) Tomorrow would be better. How about eight?
ELLEN (VOICE) Okay, tomorrow.
KAIT Bye.
Kait hangs up and dials. Kait listens to the phone ringing.
KAIT (CONT’D) C’mon, c’mon, pick up, pick up, you bimbo.
DAVID (VOICE) Hello?
KAIT Ellen just called and asked me over!
DAVID (VOICE) Calm down. What’d you say?
KAIT I told her I’d go over tomorrow.
INT. DAVID’S BEDROOM – DAY.
David is stretched across his bed. Jessie is sleeping half under the covers, with only the back of her head visible.
83.
CONTINUED:
DAVID Really? Why tomorrow?
KAIT (VOICE) It’s about time she waited for me. I need the day to pull myself together, actually.
David laughs. Jessie rolls over and mumbles.
DAVID How about cancelling on Ellen and you and I go out tomorrow?
David reaches over and strokes the back of Jessie’s head.
KAIT (VOICE) How about not? I need to see her. I need to know why she dumped me.
DAVID Okay. Don’t be afraid. You’re in control and she can’t hurt you anymore.
KAIT (VOICE) Thank you for everything, David, I love you, pal.
DAVID Me too to you. I’ll talk to you later.
(hangs up the phone) Want some coffee?
JESSIE (into the pillow) Sure. Are you going to get it?
DAVID Of course, I’m the host.
Jessie sits up as David slides out of bed, dragging the top cover with him. Jessie throws a pillow at his exiting form.
JESSIE It’ll be a nice switch!
84.
EXT. ELLEN’S DOOR – NIGHT.
Kait takes a deep breath before knocking. FOOTSTEPS from inside, and then the DEADBOLT UNLOCKING. Ellen opens the door.
KAIT Um, if I’m early I can leave and come back.
Kait runs a hand through her hair.
ELLEN It’s only quarter to eight. Come in.
Ellen steps back, opening the door wider. Kait, head slightly lowered, walks passed Ellen and into the kitchen.
INT. ELLEN’S KITCHEN – NIGHT.
The kitchen is clean. Kait stands nervously in the doorway to the living room. Ellen enters.
ELLEN Go sit down, I’ll make coffee.
Kait lingers in the doorway for a moment and then exits to the living room.
INT. ELLEN’S LIVING ROOM – NIGHT.
Kait pauses briefly at the typewriter before sitting on the couch. Gently, she touches the half typed page.
ELLEN (O.S.) How do you take your coffee?
Kait is stunned for a moment.
KAIT Umm, black.
Ellen enters with two mugs of coffee. Kait takes the coffee and sits. Kait is surprised to see black coffee in her cup. Ellen sits at the typewriter.
ELLEN What’s wrong?

CONTINUED:
KAIT I was, um, it’s just that I take it with cream, I used to drink it black.
Kait stares into her lap. Ellen looks confused.
KAIT (cont’d) The first time you asked how I took my coffee, I said black and you gave it to me with cream. . . it’s not important.
Kait drinks some of the coffee.
ELLEN I’ll put some cream in it.
Ellen reaches for the cup. Ellen’s fingertips brush Kait’s as she takes the cup. Ellen exits. Kait stares at her fingers until Ellen re-enters. Ellen holds the handle, making sure there is no physical contact as she passes the cup.
KAIT Did you get your novel mailed off in time for the competition?
ELLEN No, I decided I didn’t like the ending. I scrapped it and started over again. Yours?
KAIT I put the one I was reading to you aside and I wrote a different one. I mailed it to that competition you were writing for and a publisher.
ELLEN How many pages? What publisher?
KAIT Around three hundred fifty pages. I sent it to Cleis Books, I looked up lesbian themes in my writer’s handbook and I mailed it to them. The story is a bit more personal than the fantasy novel I started. It was surprisingly easy, actually, the words just poured out…
ELLEN

ELLEN (CONT’D)
(abruptly) I’m not sure how to say the things I want to.
Kait laughs nervously and runs her hand through her hair.
ELLEN (cont’d) I was going to call sooner, but I was afraid.
KAIT You? Afraid?
ELLEN Kait, you’ve got me on a goddamn pedestal. I want to be your friend, not your idol. There’s no way for me to live up to your expectations.
KAIT I never thought you were perfect, Ellen. I know you have faults.
ELLEN You say that, but I don’t think you believe it.
Ellen swallows the last of her coffee.
ELLEN (cont’d) You give too much. Too many presents, too many favours, too much emotions. You never gave me the chance to ask, you would jump in offering to drive me around, buy me gifts.
Kait is taken aback, but does not want to fight with Ellen. Kait agrees with everything Ellen says in order to get her back.
KAIT I’m sorry, I never thought about what I was doing. I just wanted to help, I wanted you to like me.
ELLEN I do like you, Kait, otherwise, you wouldn’t be here. I’ve just never been catered to like that before. It’s too easy to get used to.
87.
CONTINUED:
Ellen puts the cup down and stands up. Ellen paces the room, her shoulders slumped, her hands shoved deep into her pockets.
ELLEN (cont’d) I’ve never met anyone as giving as you. How was I supposed to believe it was real? That you were for real? You are just so far outside my realm of experience. You have to learn to hold back because one day you’ll meet someone worse than me and you’re really going to be hurt.
Kait opens her mouth to speak. Ellen cuts her off by raising her hand. When Ellen is satisfied that Kait is not going to speak, she lowers her hand.
ELLEN (cont’d) You’re not in love with me, you’re infatuated. I can’t love you. You can’t buy my love with flowers and favours. You’re asking too much from me.
KAIT I never asked for more than you can give. Never. I never asked you not to see David or Craig.
ELLEN Yes, you do. Every gift, every favour, every time you look at me, you’re asking me to love you more than anyone else. To love only you. I’m not for sale at any price.
(softer) I like you, Kait, but I can’t love you. I’ve had too many people I should have been able to trust hurt me. And I just can’t care anymore. I don’t have it in me.
Kait stands and walks over to Ellen.
KAIT I’m sorry, Ellen. I never wanted you to feel that way. I could never hurt you. I want you to be happy, I just wanted to make you happy.
Ellen steps away from Kait.
88.
CONTINUED:
KAIT (cont’d) I know things went too fast. I just. . . I don’t know what I’m supposed to do. I don’t know what I can say and what I can’t.
ELLEN You can tell me anything.
Kait returns to the couch. Kait stares out the window a moment and then takes a deep breath.
KAIT Your friendship is more important to me than anything else you can give me. I don’t want to lose that. I don’t want to lose you. I hated not being able to call you.
ELLEN Look, it’s been rough tonight, on both of us. It’s going to take time for us to let all this be water under the bridge. But it can’t continue like it has been. Let’s just be friends right now. No gifts, no buying me dinner and no sex.
Ellen looks at Kait.
KAIT What can either of us say or do tonight that will bring any trust back between us? I care very deeply about you Ellen, and, and I want…
ELLEN I really do want to be friends. But you have to think of us as equals Kait, not me on a pedestal with you below. If you can’t think of us as equal, then how am I supposed to? More…
INT. BINO’S RESTAURANT – NIGHT.
Kait and David sit in their regular booth, drinking coffee. Jessie brings the coffee pot over for refills.
89.
CONTINUED:
JESSIE …coffee?
KAIT Yes, please.
Jessie tops off Kait’s and David’s cups. She dumps a fresh batch of creamer containers on the table for them.
JESSIE Nice to see you happy for a change.
KAIT Nice to be happy for a change.
Jessie smiles, and ruffles Kait’s hair, then heads to the next booth. David watches her hips sway. Kait mock coughs.
DAVID Sorry. Well?
KAIT Basically, I care too much, give too much, and move too fast. She asked me to slow down, and she was right. I felt like I was going to explode.
DAVID I was telling you to slow down.
KAIT I wasn’t listening to you, remember?
DAVID So, now everything’s resolved?
KAIT Yeah, we’re going to be friends, for now.
David considers fighting Kait on this one, but bites his tongue. David sits back in the booth.
DAVID There’s something you said a while ago that I’ve been meaning to ask you. You knew about Ellen sleeping with Craig and you definitely knew about me and her. Why were you so loyal to a slut?
90.
CONTINUED:
KAIT Don’t say that. She’s, I mean, her morals are certainly different; giving little bits of herself to several people instead of everything to one person.
DAVID That still doesn’t explain your actions.
KAIT She inspired me to write. I could talk to her about my self and she’d understand, without my explaining.
DAVID But I understand.
KAIT Really? When was the last time some asshole in a passing car threw garbage at you and yelled ‘breeder?’
DAVID Has someone done that and yelled dyke at you?
KAIT Several time since my haircut, actually.
DAVID Well, it hasn’t happened when we go for walks.
KAIT No, and it won’t because then people think we’re a couple. I’m not socially suspect then, even Jessie thought we were dating. Everything is easier for you. Acceptance, romance.
Jessie breezes by and pauses to refill their coffee cups.
DAVID Romance isn’t easier, I strike out, too. Besides, there can be more than one!
91.
CONTINUED:
KAIT What?
DAVID Highlander? Nevermind, as I see it, the only difference between you and me is a video game.
KAIT A video game?
DAVID Yeah, after you solve it, you go back over it and discover every hidden path or treasure, or see if you can solve it a different way. By the end of your life, you know everything about it.
KAIT And that’s bad because?
DAVID Because I learn one way and go onto the next game. So at the end of my life, I’ll have one quick and easy method to solve each of the different games and you will have only mastered one.
KAIT That has a shallow sort of appeal, but if you apply that reasoning to relationships, it just boils down to you get back what you invest.
DAVID I think of it as cutting my losses. Look how easy I stopped seeing Ellen. She cheated with you and that other guy and I don’t play that way. You need to meet someone new. You will never be Ellen’s one and only. I don’t want you to kid yourself.
KAIT You have less of a risk hitting on a woman than I do.
92.
CONTINUED:
KAIT (cont’d) If you hit on a lesbian, you can say, ‘I’m a guy, I’m supposed to hit on women.’ If I guess wrong and hit on a straight woman…
DAVID Say ‘I’m a gay, I’m supposed to hit on women!’ Besides, that’s your fear talking. You’re sticking with Ellen because you’ve already slept with her, in a way, she’s safe. You already know what kind of pain she’ll put you through.
Kait laughs. David holds Kait’s hands over the table.
KAIT I’m just not ready to give up on Ellen just yet. I can’t believe that with enough patience and understanding, she’s just afraid of getting hurt.
DAVID I still can’t believe that you never told me.
KAIT The relationship ended before I knew how it began, before I knew where I wanted it to go. When did I have time to tell you? I was always at her place.
DAVID At least you got your sense of humour back.
KAIT I really believed I was incapable of loving anyone.
DAVID You love me.
KAIT Romantic love.
DAVID I still say it was the sex.
93.
CONTINUED:
KAIT Please. I was in love with her before the sex.
DAVID The promise of sex was there.
Kait opens her mouth and makes a noise of protest.
DAVID (cont’d) You weren’t attracted to that guy from school. Don’t interrupt. You slept with him because he wanted to sleep with you. Remember? Ellen let you believe that she was available to you and that she wanted you.
David sips his coffee. Kait considers David’s words.
DAVID (cont’d) Not sleeping with you right away is the oldest trick in the book. It’s how women hook you.
KAIT (sipping her coffee) Oh? Do tell.
DAVID
(grinning) You want me to tell you how to get women?
KAIT Okay.
DAVID First, you have to go to where the women are. Where’s a lesbian bar that you know of?
KAIT I don’t know of any.
David raises an eyebrow and his cup of coffee.
KAIT (cont’d) Look, it’s not like there’s a lot of information readily available. It’s not like you say `okay I’m a lesbian’ and suddenly you know everything.
94.
CONTINUED:
DAVID You’re the university student, there’s got to be lesbian stuff on campus. Hey, if you want to figure out something really hard, who do you think had more clothes — the Howells on Gilligan’s Island or Cat on Red Dwarf?
EXT. ELLEN’S DOOR – NIGHT.
Kait hesitates outside Ellen’s door before knocking. The door opens, Ellen stands back to let Kait in. MUSIC PLAYS.
INT. LIVING ROOM TWO NIGHTS LATER – NIGHT.
Kait and Ellen sit across the room from each other. Ellen is reading Kait her new pages from her book, occasionally sipping coffee. Kait stares into her own cup.
INT. FRONT ROOM FOUR NIGHTS LATER – NIGHT.
Ellen holds the door open for Kait. Kait moves closer to hug Ellen. Ellen turns her face away and steps back. Kait recoils. Lowering her head, Kait walks out the door.
INT. ELLEN’S LIVING ROOM FIVE NIGHTS LATER – NIGHT
Kait and Ellen sit on opposite sides of the couch watching tv. Ellen stands, takes Kait’s empty coffee cup and exits. Kait rubs her face with her hands, then drags a hand through her hair.
INT. CAR – LATER NIGHT
Kait’s car is parked outside Ellen’s house. Kait’s forehead is pressed against the steering wheel. Kait lifts her head. Tears flow down her face. The engine turns over on the second attempt
to start it. The sound of THE ENGINE DROWNS OUT THE MUSIC.
INT. BINO’S RESTAURANT – NIGHT.
David is watching Kait bang her face against the table top. David has a cup of coffee, Kait has a cup of herbal tea.
95.
CONTINUED:
DAVID People are staring.
KAIT I don’t care.
Kait stops banging her head, but does not sit up right away. When she does sit up, we see tears on her cheeks.
KAIT (cont’d) I don’t understand why she won’t even let me touch her. It tears me apart to pretend that we’re just friends and that nothing happened.
DAVID I hate to say this, but for Ellen, nothing did.
KAIT She thinks that by pretending I never loved her that I won’t anymore and that I can’t be hurt?
DAVID I don’t know. Dump her, why care?
KAIT She likes me, but she doesn’t care about me.
DAVID How can you like someone and not care?
Jessie comes by and tops up David’s cup. She almost pours coffee into Kait’s, but realizes that she has tea, not coffee in her cup.
David & Jessie exchanges smiles, and Jessie leaves.
KAIT I’d listen to people’s problems and help them, but I didn’t care. Maybe care’s the wrong word, I meant let their situation affect me. It wouldn’t matter to Ellen if I never called her or went to her place again. I wish I could be like that again.
96.
CONTINUED:
David takes Kait’s hand, holds it tenderly aloft for a moment, then slaps it hard. Kait looks at David stunned.
DAVID I don’t want to hear you say that. What happened to the flowers? If what Ellen gave you was to care about someone else, don’t lose that. Don’t lose the good things, Kait, otherwise you gained nothing from being with Ellen and lost everything.
KAIT
(picking up a creamer) All the good things are invalidated.
DAVID Just because Ellen’s not sleeping with you?
KAIT Because she’s acting like nothing ever happened between us. I can’t stand it!
Kait squeezes the creamer, breaking the seal, and cream spills.
DAVID What do you want from her?
KAIT (sopping up cream with
napkin) Acknowledgement that I meant something to her. How can she not return my feelings?
DAVID If what you felt isn’t worth the hurt, what makes you think it was love?
KAIT What do you mean?
DAVID Why do you think you loved Ellen?
97.
CONTINUED:
KAIT She made me feel safe. We shared things about ourselves that we couldn’t with other people.
DAVID I do all those things, don’t I? And I do love you and I’m not afraid to love you.
KAIT You love me want to date me love me? Or you love me best friend love me? Just keep in mind, that I’m a lesbian now.
DAVID Best friend love you, you lesbian you. That’s the truest kind of love. Longest lasting, too, because it doesn’t get bogged down with sexual games.
KAIT It’s nothing to do with sex, David. You are my best friend, I know what that means now. I do love you, just not the same way as I love Ellen.
DAVID The difference is sex.
KAIT You’re obsessed.
DAVID Ellen wanted you sexually. We don’t want that from each other. Sex is a power game. When you’ve slept with more people, you’ll understand.
KAIT I don’t just want sex. I want the emotional intimacy. Ellen’s taken herself away from me.
DAVID Even if she would have sex with you again, you wouldn’t be her only lover. So why give all of you for half of her?
98.
CONTINUED:
DAVID (cont’d) Especially when the whole Ellen isn’t worth half of you.
David sits back and sips his coffee. Kait picks up another creamer, fiddle with it for a moment, then puts it back.
KAIT You’re right. I hate you for saying it, but you’re right, no matter how much I don’t want to hear it.
DAVID
(leaning forward) I’m going to explain a theory I have.
KAIT Okay.
DAVID Remember last year when I had my wisdom teeth taken out?
KAIT Is this one of your long ass stories that has no bearing on anything until the last three lines when suddenly everything makes sense, and you could have just said those lines and saved a lot of time?
DAVID Yes, but I’m tired of you getting to do all the talking, it’s my turn and you can’t interrupt.
KAIT Sorry.
DAVID It’s okay. Now, as I was saying. Last year, when I got my wisdom teeth removed…
KAIT So you’re not wise anymore?
DAVID Ha ha. Shut up. Now. When the teeth were removed, there were stitches, and I couldn’t brush all the way to the back of my mouth.
99.
CONTINUED:
DAVID (cont’d) But, I got used to the discomfort and the unclean feeling. But, then I was afraid of getting the stitches removed.
Kait rests her head in her hands, her elbows on the table.
DAVID (cont’d) Well, the stitches being removed hurt, just as much as I thought it would, but the pain went away. I worried about swallowing the packing the dentist put in the holes, but I got used to that discomfort, too.
David raises a finger to stop Kait from talking while he sips his coffee. Kait opens her mouth to protest, but thinks better of it and waits.
DAVID (cont’d) I was also worried about the dentist removing the packing. What if my skin stuck to it and it ripped open of something? It was uncomfortable when he did remove it and I had to go around with open holes at the back of my mouth. But, the holes healed.
KAIT Uh huh. So what’s the point?
DAVID The point is any transition is painful, but you shouldn’t be afraid of change, because it gets better. It won’t be the same, but pain goes away.
KAIT So, you’re saying that someday I won’t be in pain, but I’ll be toothless?
David sits back, and finishes his coffee.
DAVID Why are you putting up with her treatment of you? You don’t need her. She’s not making you happy, is she?
100.
CONTINUED:
KAIT I feel worse when I’m with her. I feel like garbage, she acts like she’s afraid that if I touch her that I’ll turn into some kind of sex maniac and rape her. I miss the intimacy, not the sex, that connection that I thought we had. This not being able to touch her, not even for a friendly good-bye hug. . .
DAVID You already know what you have to do. Just say to yourself ‘I’ll be over her someday, why not today?’ And mean it.
Kait considers David’s words.
DAVID (cont’d) I have something for you – I picked it up in a restaurant on Davie street.
David pulls out a copy of a gay paper out of his backpack.
DAVID (cont’d) I picked it up so you could find out where the lesbians are. It’s got club listings.
Kait takes the newspaper and holds it like it’s the Holy Grail. Tears well up in her eyes.
DAVID (cont’d) I’ll always be your friend, Kait – but this way you don’t have to feel alone; find other people who understand without explanations.
David smiles evilly, then holds two fingers up and waves them across Kait’s forehead (like Ben Kenobi to the stormtroopers in Mos Eisley in Star Wars).
DAVID (cont’d) She is not the dyke you’re looking for.
101.
CONTINUED:
KAIT
(smiling and stands up) David, you’re my best friend, you’re a crazy, science fiction geek, but you’re my best friend. I want you in my life 20 years from now. I have to go.
Kait exits. David beams, waving Kait on. Jessie approaches.
DAVID Oh, shit! How am I going to get home?
Jessie pours David a fresh cup of coffee.
JESSIE I get off shift in two hours, I’ll drive you.
David grins as he picks up his coffee cup.
DAVID Yours or mine?
JESSIE I’ve seen yours.
INT. KAIT’S CAR – NIGHT.
Kait pulls up in front of Ellen’s house. She turns off the engine and rests her forehead against the steering wheel. Kait sits up. An ELDERLY WOMAN pushing a grocery cart walks past the car. Kait watches the woman as she turns the corner.
INT. ELLEN’S FRONT ROOM – NIGHT.
Ellen is trying to tidy the front room. There is a KNOCK at the door. Ellen picks up a broom and wields it as a weapon.
ELLEN (impersonating a man’s voice) Who’s there?
KAIT (VOICE) Um, hi. It’s, ah, Kait. Can I come in?
Ellen opens the door. Kait steps back, a little afraid.
102.
CONTINUED:
ELLEN I would appreciate a call first. It’s late.
Kait’s anger flares a little, giving her confidence.
KAIT I’m sorry, if you prefer, I’ll leave, find a pay phone, call you, then come back.
Ellen glares at Kait. When Kait doesn’t back down, Ellen opens the door wider and stands back to let Kait in. Kait slips passed Ellen, making a point of not touching her. Ellen closes the door.
ELLEN’S KITCHEN
The kitchen is cluttered. Kait heads for the living room. Ellen enters.
ELLEN Coffee?
Kait stops, but does not turn around.
KAIT No. I mean, no thanks. I don’t want any coffee.
ELLEN Something really is wrong.
KAIT (LOOKING AT HER HANDS FOR
COURAGE) I’ve never been accused of tact. I can’t be just your friend, Ellen. We went too far for me to be able to go back. It hurts too much when you…
ELLEN You go and sit, I’ll make coffee.
Kait exits to the living room. Ellen leans against the stove for a moment. She look around the counter and finds a package of cigarettes. The package is empty. Cursing under her breath, Ellen turns the burner on and fills the pot with water.
103.
ELLEN’S LIVING ROOM
Kait is sitting on the couch. Ellen stalks into the room.
ELLEN Well, that’s quite a topic.
Kait doesn’t answer. Ellen sits at the typewriter.
ELLEN (cont’d) Okay, why?
KAIT If we go on like…this, then what we shared meant nothing.
ELLEN Why can’t we just have had some fun that’s over now, and get on with being friends?
KAIT
(stands and paces) What I thought we had, what I felt we had, meant something to me. And you arbitrarily ended our romance and reduced us to friends, without taking my feelings for you into consideration. If my feelings don’t matter to you, how can I believe that I do? What’s to stop you from just terminating the friendship, too?
From the kitchen the SOUND OF WATER BOILING. Ellen stands.
ELLEN I’ve got to make the coffee.
Ellen exits. Kait sits back on the couch. Kait listens to the sounds of Ellen LOUDLY MAKING COFFEE.
Kait swallows hard and manages to fight back tears. As Kait runs her hand through her hair, Ellen enters carrying two steaming mugs of coffee.
ELLEN (cont’d) So, because we had sex, we can’t be friends?
104.
CONTINUED:
KAIT It’s not that simple.
ELLEN Because we’re not having sex, we can’t be friends?
Kait stands and paces the room. Ellen puts the coffee down on her desk and backs away from Kait. Kait points at Ellen.
KAIT That! That is why we are not friends.
Kait stands and backs Ellen around the room.
KAIT (cont’d) Friends don’t shrink away in horror at the possibility of physical contact. Every time you back away from me, I die inside.
Kait grabs Ellen by the shoulders, holding her at arms length.
KAIT (cont’d) Ellen, considering all the places I have touched you, it’s ridiculous for you to avoid my hand on your shoulder or my body brushing passed yours in the hallway.
Ellen breaks the hold and backs a few steps away from Kait.
ELLEN I don’t want you to touch me because you would not want to leave it as just a touch. I’m not going to sleep with you again, and I don’t think it’s fair to you to lead you on.
KAIT It’s not fair to me for you to act like I never kissed you! And it’s not fair to you for me to pretend to be just friends, either.
ELLEN Pretend?
105.
CONTINUED:
KAIT Ellen, I sit across the room from you, and when the moonlight hits your face a certain way, I am overwhelmed by you. Sometimes, when your voice is low, I want to reach out. . .
Kait looks away so Ellen can’t see that she’s starting to cry.
ELLEN I am not an object for your desire.
KAIT
(incredulous and angry) You never were an object. Can’t you believe that for once, someone actually valued you for you?
ELLEN It’s not my fault! You took everything too seriously.
KAIT How was I to know? You knew I’d never been involved with anyone before! You told me that I was a puppy. You told me to watch myself in the clinches or I’d get hurt by someone. I never thought it would be you. How was I to know that you didn’t really care?
ELLEN I do care about you, Kait. But I can’t love you. I don’t want a serious relationship, and I told you that at the start.
KAIT You say you care for me, you act like you love me.
Kait turns her back on Ellen. She tries to get control, but Kait’s anger and hurt surges, she fails.
KAIT (cont’d) You go through all the motions of being in a relationship. I’m the inexperienced one. I responded to you by falling in love.
106.
CONTINUED:
KAIT (cont’d) And I’m the criminal in all this? You took more than my virginity, Ellen. You took my fucking innocence.
Ellen picks up a coffee cup and holds it out to Kait.
ELLEN
(trying to be funny) Drink your damn coffee and sit down, you’re making me nervous.
Kait reaches for the cup, purposefully touching Ellen’s fingers with her fingertips. Ellen pulls away at Kait’s touch, the cup falls. Kait takes a deep breath and exhales slowly. Kait studies the portrait on the wall. Ellen sits down at her typewriter.
KAIT I’m not asking you to return my feelings, I’m just asking you to admit that I have them. That’s all.
Ellen opens her mouth to speak. Kait turns and cuts her off. Kait paces in front of the couch, then leans in the doorway to the kitchen. Ellen stands, twisting the belt to her robe violently.
ELLEN
(upset) Please, sit down. I don’t want to never see you again. Just because I can’t love you doesn’t mean you don’t mean a lot to me Kait. You do. You can’t just walk out on that.
Ellen gestures vaguely towards the couch.
KAIT You did. You told me not to call you. You only called me because David made you. He told me.
ELLEN No! I just asked for a break, not an end. Please, come back and sit down and we’ll talk.
KAIT But it is an end. There’s no intimacy between us.
107.
CONTINUED:
KAIT (cont’d) You’re not even letting me read the new version of your novel. Why do you even let me come over? This is the end, a break implies a later continuation.
ELLEN So, then as far as you’re concerned, we are only friends if we fuck. Liking me is conditional on getting sex. You said you were different.
KAIT No! That’s not it.
Kait walks to Ellen’s chair. Kait picks up Ellen’s cup from the typing desk, leaning close to Ellen. Ellen turns her face away slightly.
KAIT (cont’d) And if that is what you think, then you’ll never understand. David’s right, I’m better off away from you. At least I can put this behind me then and not have you be an open wound.
Kait backs away from Ellen. Ellen keeps her face turned away. Kait walks to the kitchen doorway, she stops, but does not turn.
KAIT (cont’d) I had no intention of kissing you – now or ever. It was interesting, knowing you, Ellen. Good luck with your book.
Kait drops Ellen’s cup beside hers on the floor, then exits to the kitchen. Ellen chases her.
ELLEN’S KITCHEN
Ellen grabs Kait’s shoulder, spinning her around to face her.
ELLEN What do you really want from me, Kait? Everyone wants something. What’s your angle?
Ellen opens her robe. Kait is trying desperately not to look.
108.
CONTINUED:
ELLEN (cont’d) Make love to me, show me how you love me!
KAIT No! Yes, I want the feelings, the intimacy! What I feel is real, I want you to admit that. You say can’t feel the same for me. Or is it won’t?
Kait slams herself back against the kitchen wall. Kait avoids looking at Ellen. Kait swallows hard.
KAIT (cont’d) Sex is a way to show you how much I care. It’s not an end unto itself, but a means to one. Ellen, please close your robe.
Ellen presses against Kait.
ELLEN Maybe the romance wasn’t a game, Kait. Maybe these last few weeks have been the game. A test. Maybe I’ve just been waiting for you to come here and demand that we continue our relationship.
Ellen presses against Kait. Kait closes her eyes and leans in to kiss Ellen. Just before their lips meet, Kait opens her eyes. Ellen’s eyes are open, triumphant. Kait steps away from Ellen and leans against the kitchen wall, heaving a choked sob once, then slides down the wall.
KAIT I can’t, not this way. Not without real feelings, I deserve more, Ellen.
Ellen pulls her robe closed.
ELLEN So that’s it, we’re over?
Kait stands, wipes her eyes and drags her hand through her hair.
109.
CONTINUED:
KAIT I don’t come piecemeal, you can’t have just the parts of me that you want.
ELLEN If we have sex, we can still be friends?
KAIT No, we can’t. It’s not that; it wouldn’t be in the way I want it with you.
ELLEN Why? Have you invented a new position?
KAIT I ask too much of you, and you ask too little of me. I can’t have sex and not be affected emotionally. I’m not built that way.
ELLEN Kait, I’m…
KAIT You’re built that way. I think you’d better lock the door after me.
Kait turns and exits to the front room. Ellen pulls her robe tighter and follows. Kait unlocks the deadbolt.
ELLEN Kait! Will you call me again? I do care about you! Can’t you try to be just friends?
ELLEN’S FRONT DOOR
The door opens and Kait steps outside. Ellen appears in the open door.
ELLEN I don’t want it to be over like this, Kait, please, not like this. Don’t leave mad!

Kait stops, but does not turn. Tentatively, Ellen places her hand on Kait’s shoulder. Kait melts against the touch, tears flowing down her cheeks. She places her hand over Ellen’s.
KAIT You told me once all relationships ended badly, that if things were good, they wouldn’t end.
Kait lifts Ellen’s hand off of her shoulder and turns around.
KAIT (cont’d) How can you expect me to go on like I never held you? To put my feelings aside? Can you even feel guilt? Who’s asking too much now?
ELLEN I never asked you to love me, I only wanted a little fun! That’s all.
Kait releases Ellen and steps away.
KAIT I’m sorry, I’d like to do this your way and give you half of myself and stay, but I don’t know how to do that.
Kait tenderly touches Ellen’s cheek. Ellen closes her eyes, pressing against the caress. Ellen opens her eyes and pushes Kait against the opposite door frame. Ellen kisses Kait hard. Kait breaks the kiss and presses her face into Ellen’s shoulder.
KAIT (cont’d) You never let me say it aloud, but I love you. I do. I did. Funny how I can say it now, when I can’t let you matter to me anymore.
Kait gently pushes Ellen away, Ellen resists, then steps back. Kait drops her hand back to her side.
ELLEN You’ll never get rid of your feelings for me, Kait. Sheila was the only–
Kait places a finger over Ellen’s lips and waits a moment to make sure Ellen will not speak before removing her hand.

KAIT I feel bad for you Ellen, but you’re not going to be my Shiela. I won’t be you to anyone.
Kait steps away from Ellen.
KAIT (cont’d) I’m not going to become you.
Kait backs away and exits around the corner. Ellen reties the belt of her robe. She swallows hard, then wipes at her eyes, rubs her hands against her face, then drags one hand through her hair. She closes the door.
EXT. LITTLE SISTER’S ENTRANCE ON DAVIE STREET – DAY. Kait and Gabriella enter the store. LESBIAN FOLK MUSIC plays. Kait’s POV around the front area’s notice boards, glancing
over the roommate request & other announcements.
Kait’s POV into the actual shop, glancing over the cards, CD’s, videos, book racks and finally looking to the counter. Kait seems to swoon and starts to back out of the store. Gabriella grabs her by the arm and pushes Kait into the store
ahead of her. GABRIELLA
Get in there. STORE CLERK looks up. Gabriella grins and lets go of Kait.
CLERK
Hi! Can I help you with anything? TWO DYKES push past Kait and Gabriella and head into the book section.
Kait steps farther in, realizing she’s blocking the entrance. KAIT I’m, uh, new. . . The clerk laughs, the two dykes smile. The clerk comes around the counter and puts her hand on Kait’s shoulder.
